Will just be used for basic backups and running Plex (no flash transcoding or anything).

Is it nice and quiet?

Thanks for any advice 😀

It is nice and quiet. I have one with two 4 GB HDD and an extra 8 GB RAM for a total of 10 GB. It performs well for an entry-level model.

I’m really pleased with mine. Very easy to set up and use with DSM providing a good UI, especially after the nightmare that was our last NAS (a Netgear). Plex runs smoothly. Despite what the reviews indicate, I’ve had no problems with the DS apps (on Android and iPadOS).

For these general purposes the standard amount of RAM is ok, but I do feel it struggles a bit with Surveillance Station (and that’s just with three cameras), so am tempted to upgrade this (Mauricio - what sort of price did it cost for this?)

Noise-wise - absolutely fine in a living space (we have ours behind a TV), but I’d not put it in a room where people may sleep.

I got a Lenovo laptop for my wife for Christmas and swapped the 8 GB RAM with a 16 GB RAM SODIMM I got from PB Tech - then just inserted that spare 8 GB in the DS220+ slot for a total of 10 GB RAM - all recognised and useable.

Basically, any current SODIMM will work, really.

Yes Synology are great NAS units. Expansion is excruciating slow though.

Thanks, that’s good to know, as (unsurprisingly) Synology push a narrow range of RAM and say to stick to no more than another 4GB!

Would something like this be suitable, and is it an ok price they’re asking? https://www.trademe.co.nz/computers/components/memory-ram/8gb/auction-3253413291.htm

I thought this was the case too. Just this week I decided to add 8GB to my DS920, did some research and found the Crucial sticks should work, ordered it off PB Tech and installed. The blue power light kept blinking, did some reading and people suggested its a ram check and to leave it. Went and did some other jobs and came back 2 hours later to it still blinking.

I was scratching my head as all the specs match, realised partners laptop has the same ram specs so swapped them. Her Acer had Hynix 8GB module, I put it in DS920 and it booted straight away. The Acer also booted with the Crucial so I've just left them as is. Shes none the wiser! But I'm still left wondering why it didn't work...

For reference this is what I ordered, and did not work - https://www.pbtech.co.nz/product/MEMCRU079301/Crucial-8GB-DDR4-SODIMM-2666-MTs-PC4-21300-CL19-Un

@nate001 yes, I got the 16 GB version of that Crucial, put in the Lenovo and the original Lenovo went into the NAS...

For reference this is what I ordered, and did not work - https://www.pbtech.co.nz/product/MEMCRU079301/Crucial-8GB-DDR4-SODIMM-2666-MTs-PC4-21300-CL19-Un

And this is why I'm hesitant about pressing 'buy' on RAM as, reading around, these NASs do seem to be fairly fussy about what they accept - and if it doesn't work, I don't have something else to swap it with.

The non-official brand that seems to get the most mentions is Crucial, though the model I've noted down as being compatible does differ by one character compared to that bought by Nate001  - PB Tech item is CT8G4SFS6266, whereas I've read that CT8G4SFS8266 works (not sure of the difference between the two; whether it's meaningful or just release date or whatever).

I'm only looking to stick 4 or 8GB in, so if anyone has a spare stick that they know is compatible and are willing to sell please let me know!

These are some of the compatible items (and, hopefully, the different capacity variations of these would work as well, as per the Crucial pairing below):

  • Kingston KVR26S19S6/4 4GB DDR4 2666 SODIMM
  • Crucial CT4G4SFS8266 4GB, DDR4, 2666 SODIMM
  • Crucial CT8G4SFS8266 8GB DDR4 - 2666 SODIMM
  • Samsung M471A1K43CB1-CTD 8GB DDR4 2666

I was looking at the DS220+ as well, but after alot of going back and forth, I decided to spend abit more and get a DS920+.  I'm glad I did and I can see me needing the extra 2 bays by the end of the year.
