Well - its pretty much official as far as I am concerned - the OKTA Touch is a dog!!! Two of us have been through 8 of them now (since February) and they are just getting totally unusuable! Who else has had issues?

Faults repeatedly encountered are:

  1. Screen locks and won't respond so you can't unlock - have to remove battery to reset device. Also occassionally have the reverse where device won't lock to start with.
  2. Constantly cuts off calls, either doesn't ring, or ring's half a note then cuts off, when in blank screen or locked mode.
  3. Units shut themselves down for no reason 'out of the blue'.
  4. Clock on the handset set to synchronise off network, then runs about 10 minutes out of sync with the network until device is powered off and back on. (This may be related specifically to the known cluster fault with the OKTA Touch).
  5. Endless issues with Voicemail and Text Message notifications (could be Network issue but unlikely as no one else suffers them).

Plus a couple of other lesser issues such as regularly flaky on USB connection, and so on... Basically we have found the Touch unusable in a corporate environment - the number of calls missed is horrific, units not responding is frustrating, and a very good looking unit on paper in real life is a junker!

We get sent replacement units which suffer the exact same faults within 48 hours of activation which is very frustrating, and since there are (apparantly) known issues (such as the cluster fault at least 2 of our units had).

Seriously looking at changing to the Samsung i325 (or possibly OKTA Boss or Blackberry)...

And this happens even on a stock device, with no other apps installed at all? Or do you install any applications or manage the devices (via XML files, via Device Manager, etc?)

P.S. I just read the OKTA Boss thread (from April) and many similar experiences - although on the whole Telegistics have been pretty good and people seem to misunderstand the difference between flashing and upgrading firmware - but definitley not keen on the Boss as a Touch alternative!

is like a PC, you need to maintain, there are forums specialised for WM6 devices, that you can download oxios memory to keep your RAM clean, and sk lite to clear all the bad shortcuts and update your windows app db. hope this helps

Err, just read it again, and sounds like TCL has a bad batch ... I have friends on them and they are generally pretty slick and fast. Good ROM and RAM size.

Hi Mauricio - stock device - no software added, no custom tweaks. Only external factors are we are TCL customer (not Telecom) and we ported our 021 numbers over last year. However have no other issues with anyone else in our org (incl. 1 Blackberry, 1 OKTA Agent, and a couple of dozen Nokias - which are mostly the 6275i) so implies its not a network issue for the missed calls, etc...

Our original 'imited edition' Green units weren't too bad, but gradually got worse over time, after about 4 months they went away for repair and reflashing and came back worse than when they went away (believed the had new firmware verison but can't confirm), since June we have been regularly sending the standard (Black) units away and being sent back new ones almost immediately. I have also been told there are some known issues with the Touch (including cluster faults mentioned) which is why we assume we get sent replacements so quickly, and the only reason we have persevered is there is supposedly a significant software upgrade due very soon to apparantly fix the known software>hardware issues...

Had a couple of instances (for example) of texts and voicemails 'appearing' over 24 hours after they actually happened - which we thought was a network issue - but when the voicemail appeared a 'missed call' entry also appeared in the phone dated the time it appeared, but hte origianl call was about 26 hours earlier in one case!

Well aware of that - it never gets to that point - brand new devices start misbehaving after only 24 hours and within a week or two are a frustrating PIA. Devices are repeatedly restarted, sometimes multiple times a day. My current handset locked up the screen on me before it had even been activated and had my number transferred to its ESN!

I have been through 5 Touches. All with problems as described above, two of them that never had a single peice of 3rd party software on them.

I need Exchange Activesync, tethered (or Bluetooth) data connection, and a reliable telephone, and it must be on Telecom NZ. Unfortunately, that only leaves the i325.

I have had my i325 for about 4 weeks or so now, and it is ugly, too big, landscape screen blows chunks, qwerty keys are slightly too small, and its just YIIIIIUUUUUCKKK in general BUT...

  • Its reliable as a phone
  • Has not even looked like crashing once in 4 weeks
  • Battery life is 'good' (2 days-ish on slim battery with push email)
  • Although its tall and wide, its thin at least
  • It has Exchange Activesync
  • It does tethered data
And those things make it the only suitable choice for me.

My partners 'Boss' has been away, she likes the phone but finds it extremely unreliable.

I have also had a Titan. Good device, but again, not overly reliable as a phone.

WCDMA is the light at the end of the tunnel at the moment!

I know two Telecom customers (non-corporate) with them who have the exact same issues... Both have the Green 'limited edition' model. Neither will take it in to shop because of our experience - generally believe the Firmware updates make the issues worse instead of better (so they want to keep their very original versions and live with the 'lesser' issues)... Also have had annecdotal comments a couple of other TCL customers have similar complaints - but I don't think it's a purely TCL batch of stock issue due to the above.

hmm interesting, I can't really comment, may be it's HTC as my bro's polaris (touch cruise) had to be sent back for 6 weeks due to sdcard holder malfunctioning. I am thinking twice, about upgrading now ... as my jasjam is just as good as future phones at the moment and the way the chefs are cooking, I am happy to keep it for another year.

That's exactly where we are at Tony. Same logic - and currently left looking at the i325...

I am sure TCNZ will bring out more devices, or can you be enticed to move to the other side Tongue out

Edit I meant TNZ and TCNZ now they both on the same network ...

Ha - no show of that! Changed to CDMA last year with TCL specifically because Vodafone are a pack of lying, sleazy M&%#$(&^@# F$_#%$, and their network's coverage and performance is (or was) just as bad! I could tell you a few first-hand (absolute horror) stories about VFNZ's business practices...

Surprised

Hmm I heard and read a few too, but I personally don't have any issues. I have 2 SIM on business account with them and honestly no issues. I will just sit on the fence for now. Have had this for 3 years and counting ... Innocent

As long as you don't fall into the big gaping holes in between the departments with either telco you should be fine. It's when you try and get someone to take responsibility that you'll have problems.

Very interesting to hear this about the touch. I was considering getting a Telecom contract with one of these as a personal phone (despite my special VF rates).
