An interesting little quirk of the PS5 Slim has been reported on Tom's Guide.

It appears that the PS5 Slim with a disc drive will initially require an internet connection to set up. By comparison the original PS5 model, released in November 2020, can play disc-based games right out of the box without involving the internet.

If it’s just on setup IMO it’s no big deal.

Yes and that’s why I said ‘initially’.

I'm looking to get a PS5 for the kids for xmas this year - was originally figuring a slim would be a good value offering, but putting aside the fact they won't be available in NZ for xmas, they don't appear to be the no-brainer that previous slims offered.

I think I want a disc drive anyway to let the kids enjoy some second-hand titles and maybe even some PS4 stuff, and the size etc doesn't appear that different.

This slim feels like one that makes life a little easier for manufacturing/distibution margins, rather than a step change for consumers.

So it looks like I'll be on the hunt for a deal on a PS5 Disc Classic bundle before xmas - maybe black Friday? :-)

Do we know the Slim won't be available here before Xmas? As previously mentioned, the slim will come with a 1TB SSD compared to the 825GB SSD of the original PS5. An extra 175GB isn't trivial.

I also don't think it can be understated how ridiculously huge the standard PS5 is. I remember reading a fair bit about people getting them home and finding they wouldn't fit in their TV cabinets. For many the size difference with the Slim would be enough to solve that issue. I advise anyone getting a PS5 to look at the dimensions (considering airflow as well) and check it will fit where you are planning to put it before purchasing.

Other things to note:

  • US pricing of the Slim will be the same as the original for the disc version, but the disc-less version will actually be more expensive than the original.
  • If you want it in the vertical position, the slim will require you to purchase a separate vertical stand. This is already included with the original.

I don't know why people are still calling it the slim.  It's not branded as that, and it's definitely not physically worthy of the word 😂

I didn't realise it wasn't officially branded as Slim.

You're correct, it's not particularly slim and is actually only fractionally slimmer at it's widest point. The biggest different is it's length/height. But people need to call it something to distinguish it from the original form factor. If Sony aren't giving it a name then it makes sense that people would adopt the "Slim" moniker based on the naming convention of previous PlayStations.

'Slimmer, but still too awkward to transport portably'

I read that Alan Wake 2 was released digital only, with no retail disc alternative. I wouldn't be surprised if that becomes the standard before long.

The last thing the game makers want is for you to be able to on-sell a game, that means they're missing out on a sale.

I had no idea about this. So they are going to discount the price right? Right? <insert meme here>

Just checked and it is $60 USD and $96.95 NZD.

Don't Digital only PC games sell at a discount?

Wasn't too thrilled with how Remedy did the Control -> Control Ultimate across generations not being able to bring your save so can't say I am surprised they have done something like this.

Will try to hold out for a price drop.

$96.95 does make it cheaper than the digital version of most major games at release, but not cheaper than what you can generally get a disc copy for since they always seem to be discounted at release. So cheaper for people who only ever buy digital, and probably about the same for those who would normally buy physical. But since it eliminates the possibility of onselling the game, it's actually way worse for physical media buyers who playthrough once and then sell. And it's a swift kick in the balls for those who always buy used physical copies a few weeks after the initial release when people start selling them.

And if digital only releases of major games becomes the norm, they'll just jack the pricing back up to the $120+ range again.

Same with Baldur's Gate 3.

I didn't even think about that. And the scary thing is it rings true and I totally agree, of course they would jack the price up they thought it would work out better for them.

Control came on on PS plus about 18 months after release, wonder if they will do the same here in that it will come out on a subscription service. Though I doubt I could hold out that long.

I personally prefer physical release but I had to bite the bullet for AW2. I will keep. buying physical releases after all that’s why I went with ps5 disk edition.
