yeah, i think this is another failure of hte storage ecosystem, stating an unformmated size and then the useable size actually being lower... consoles compound this by having the OS as well etc. so this lowers it even further... Ideally they would say 900GB actual storage but that doesn't then work PR wise if your rival then posts ther device with 1TB but do not say formatted... the average consumer will go to the bigger number even if its incorrect.

Maybe in general, but I seriously doubt anyone buying a console swing one way or another due to disk capacity. It's all about the games. In my mind the Playstation will continue to win that fight. I'm almost certainly going to have both as I did the last 2 generations, though I am frustrated I missed out on the day one release stock of the X.

Ars Technica did a bit of a pre-release XBSX hands-on and one of the things they covered was the Quick Resume. Interesting enough, for last gen games only you can also use an external USB 3.1 drive.

They mentioned that it should hold 3-4 games on average in QR state, but again, with last-gen games, they averaged 12 games in testing.

Load times are halved in some cases though, so that should be neat.

It is swaying me but only really from the series s to the series X.

The 200gb I'm assuming includes the quick resume memory dumps, when you think on the series X it's probably about 12gb per game and reviewers are saying you can have 5+ games in the cache so that's 60gb right there. Plus the removable drives only report 910gb available, so it's likely the old hard drive argument again where 1tb drives are never 1tb. Adding that up the os is likely more around the 50gb mark, still a huge OS but it does go some way to explain the excessive 200gb useage.

I'm hoping that on the s the smaller pool of ram will mean that cache needs less space and they will free up at least 20gb more space and that 90gb from the conversion will be more like 45gb. Not great as you'd still have 130gb of that 512gb gone but probably not as bad as it might initially seem on the S, I just hope no one km the s wants to play cod and flight simulator when they arrive.

I'll also be interested to see if shutting off quick resume (apparently this is an option) will mean you can reclaim that cache. On the series s that may very well be a sacrifice some are willing to make to install and extra couple of games. I'd also be keen to be able to quick resume certain games, so if you like playing something like FIFA as a time filler just have that permanently in quick resume to jump in and out of while running other games you'd play for longer with normal loading times.

So some retailers have pages to preorder for shipment in December *sometime*, but retailers like Mightyape say they won't list till they have confirmed stock. Interesting different approaches.

Wondering if JB Hifi are just trying to lock people in?

Ars has published an "unrestricted preview" of the Series X.

A few interesting comments about the form-factor and it seems to perform really well thermally while using almost the same power on average as the Xbox One X (which I imagine will change in future with more taxing next-gen games). The performance boost sounds great for last-gen stuff, but it really would be nice to see it stretch its legs properly on a few more next-gen games. DiRT 5 sounds like a bit of a mixed bag, but I guess pre-release and all that.

That rough boxy look though; while they were heavily prioritizing thermal performance by the sound of it, it really is quite a basic design next to the PS5.

To me it is orders of magnitude better designed and looking than the PS5, it is something I actually want to have in my HT cabinet instead of finding somewhere to hide a cheap looking quasi-futuristic router.

I am hoping for a PS5 slim / redesigned model before any games come out that make me buy a PS5.

Other than it's size, the PS5 is much more attractive to me, especially since it's apparent they are setting up for removable covers for customization. Not sure how many people will operate the PS5 standing up, I certainly will be putting it on the side immediately, so it fits in my rack.

I assume the Xbox will also operate on it's side as well?

Both will operate in either orientation.

I removed the middle shelf from my HT cabinet to provide space to stand the Series X vertically and consequently to also fit a theoretical PS5 at some point in the future. With both being tall, narrow designs I can fit both plus my receiver on the one shelf, so the second shelf is superfluous anyway.

That's a fair comment; my first thought was it looks like an oversized Blu-ray player, so it kinda fits in with the HT aesthetic.

As much as I like the PS5's "aerodynamic" look, the XSX design of "function first, form second" is a winner for me. Not sure I like the sound of the PS5's "dust-catcher" holes, and it is a big chonky boy.

The stand is better implemented on the PS5, since you can detach and use it both horizontally and vertically, whereas the XSX just flops on it's side with the non-removable bottom stand hanging off the side.

Do you think there will be controller and memory cards available on launch date to buy in store?

I could pre-order the additional accessories, but wanted to surprise my son by going to buy the other bits I need.

The little things make the biggest difference.

Controller will be available as an extra accessory for sure on launch day. I would say that memory card will be available too but do you need to buy the storage card on launch day as they are not cheap and you could ho,d off until you need it and it may come down in price by then? You only need the storage card for new gen games. You can play and load all BC games from USB 3.1 external HDD.

Do whatever you want to do man.

Microsoft has published a list of games that are "optimized" for the Xbox Series X/S.

Looks like a mix of recent releases + next-gen stuff, but most support Smart Delivery, so that's a bonus.
