So update on the GoPlus issue; if I stream music on a data connection WHILE playing Pokemon Go, then the GoPlus works ..
On my Nexus 5X this may be an issue as operating system + Pokemon Go = no extra programs open (something to do with RAM management in Android 7); shall have to test when my phone comes back from repair!
New phone - Huawei P10 Lite - Pokemon Go + PoGo Plus = works when screen is off.
However have noticed when the screen is on and I get to a crowded PokeStop where lots of Pokemon are waiting to be collected the response rate to pickup the first Pokemon can be very slow; with 5 Pokemon on screen it took 20 seconds for it to notice the first Pokemon and with 12 on screen I disconnected/reconnected the Plus for anything to happen.
However this is not a "new phone" issue - I've had it happen on all Androids I have used the GoPlus with.
I have my catching disabled, so I'm not sure what the experience is like on iPhone. I'm still getting the "app crashes in background" problem, but it's less frequent that it was, and I just leave the game open if I am farming stops. There's a rumoured "fire and ice" event starting next Wednesday (for the summer/winter solstice), so I want to make sure I have enough Pokeballs. I almost ran out during the rock event, and there are some great Pokemon I really want to catch in this one. This is the full list. Not sure about more Slugma, but heck yes to more Lapras and Swinub - especially with Mamoswine coming in future gens. I also want more Dewgongs, because I love using them against Dragonite when training.
Fire:
Ice:
Happily, the nearby rugby club is a fairly decent Cyndaquil nest right now. I'm closing in on 250 candy. I've caught a 84% but the CP is only about 2/3 of possible total, and a 70% with very high CP, so unless I catch a better one, I might evolve both. I'll do the 84% first and if it gets great moves, I might just use the extra candy to power it up instead. Typhlosion is one of only two I don't have yet (Unown being the other).
Looks like the app is being updated again, too. That'll probably be tomorrow for Android and Thursday for iOS.

Heard about the potential Fire/Ice event .. seems like it has too many possible Pokemon in it and needs to be split up into just Fire or just Ice
I need more Cyndaquil and Houndoor candies (as the rest I have enough through egg hatches) and the local nest spots for these two have been small/infrequent spawn nests making it hard to get there and do any serious catching (1-2 Pokemon per hour).
Swinub is a menance in Dunedin already, so I really hope we get increased spawns of anything else .. also a pain in the 8888 to catch either manually or with the PoGo Plus.
I don't think I am going to rush the update to PoGo version 0.63.4 since I have a phone where things just work...
Yes - I did wonder if the increased spawns would be too diluted if there are that many Pokemon included. Maybe they'll leave a few out (Slugma, please). Funny, Swinub is really rare in Auckland. I only have a Piloswine because my lure pulled one in at Auckland Domain.

littleheaven: A few Android users who have downloaded the latest APK are reporting significant improvements in PoGo+ performance (on Silph Road Reddit). Specifically mentioned was an improvement in the lag recognizing Pokémon. I haven't been able to connect my son's at all, so it'll be interesting to test that out when he gets the update.
If the newest update improves the lag, it would be excellent.
One thing I can't find on the new phone is the ability to download and install apps via the APK .. I'll just have to wait for the official update to drop to the Play Store
So the Fire and Ice event is real; I am guessing more details to come soon
As well as confirmation that all gyms will be shutdown in preparation for a rework
Yes, I am super excited for all the upcoming changes. I'm hoping Gen3 gets thrown in there sometime between now and the end of September. I can't wait to see what all these "fun new ways" to play the game might be. I haven't been this excited since it started.
On another note, I went down to a local park after dropping my son at school to spin my first stop of the day and was greeted with this incredible view. This is what makes this game so amazing. I live in a very modest suburb in Auckland and yet this wee oasis is tucked away down the end of the road, and I have never really appreciated it before it got two Pokestops and a gym!

Since my son's Android updated to the latest version, he can now use the Go+ on it again! It's still a bit laggy, but we were able to max out his item storage on a short (slow) drive around the neighbourhood yesterday. There's a route from my house to my parents' that passes at least 14 Pokestops, and Auckland traffic is conveniently slow most of the time :) When stationery, his seemed to buzz about the same time as mine, but when moving, his was a good 5 seconds after mine. He still got a good percentage of the stops, though, even though he was well past them.

Nice view!
I've taken to disabling PokeStops when in the car, as it was getting to a point where I wasn't getting any Pokemon because the Plus was targeting Stops first BUT was always targeting the one I had just been past and I was too far away by the time it came to pressing the button.
Not sure if it was an update that change the functionality, or ..
Changing phones as I was doing for the last few weeks did not resolve .. have heard through TSR that Androids are a lot slower to notify of Pokemon/Stops compared to iPhones - but no iPhone around me to confirm
That's interesting! I turned Pokemon off because I was never getting any stops. I wonder if they changed it? Shame you don't get the option to select which gets priority - I think that new Gotcha device can do it. Seriously thinking of asking for one for my birthday in September :) I'm slowly bringing my resource levels up, but my ultra ball supply is still pathetic. I imagine they'll all be gone again after the Fire & Ice event. I did some admin on my Pokemon inventory last night - I have so many evolved Pokemon with awful movesets that have the Sword of Damocles hanging over them right now. As soon as I know which are useful (or not) after the gym rework, there's going to be a cull. Likewise, I'm holding off on a few key evolutions (Tyranitar, another Dragonite, another Gyarados) until I see what changes have been made.

The Plus should do Pokemon over PokeStops by default
Pretty sure the PokeStop issue while driving is due to speed lock getting out of wack, I've had runs when I have forgotten to turn off Stops and the Plus works correctly (Pokemon first, then Stops) and then I get runs of no Pokemon and a massive Stop delay. Just yesterday I was heading home on the motorway (travelling at 100km) and managed to catch two Pokemon ..
I've been trying to figure out how to get my Pokemon storage back down to a more sensible level; I've been hovering around 450 stored Pokemon for a while and every time I do a clean out I tend to keep a few extra. As a result I've been working out if a Pokemon has any use and at the same time working out what I may need to evolve in order to fill out the Pokedex with genders ...
The gym change may however may mean significant changes .. so I better hold off until things are finalised.
I'm at 930 Pokemon and likely to be many more during the upcoming event. I have too many of silly things like Sudowoodo and Octillery, which are currently pretty useless, but I'm waiting until next week before I send them to the grinder, lol.
With the Go+, I'm unlikely to ever turn my Pokemon catching back on, unless I get seriously overstocked on Pokeballs. I never seem to have enough. Pokestops in my suburb are all down dead-end streets with about 1-2 km between them, so I actually have to go quite a long way out of my way to hit a decent number. The perils of working from home! The company that made me redundant has 5 within 100 metres of the front door. *sigh*
