Hello everyone.

Months ago my PS4 started ejecting Watch Dogs from my console. I thought maybe it was just the disc, didn't think much of it until it continually done it. I looked it up online and there were people saying all over the place that discs were ejecting.

There are "fixes" for it, and they do work for the time being (At least that I can recall) however the disc kept ejecting by themselves months, weeks and sometimes days later.

Anyway months later the same problem happened still with Watch Dogs, then with Far Cry 4. I just put my PS4 on for the first time in 2 weeks, loaded up Far cry 4 and within 10 minutes the disc ejected. Put it back in a minute later, got to the loading screen and ejected itself.

I just turned it off now, like I do every time this happens. I don't get on m PS4 much because of this.

Anyway, I bought it on release day from the Warehouse, so around 14-15 months ago. I didn't buy a warranty or anything, but I am hoping it isn't too late to take it back and hopefully get it repaired or better yet a brand new console.

Isnt there something in the CGA that says goods must be fit for use for a certain amount of time, or something like that?

Thanks for all the help. If somebody knows how to fix this problem 100% guaranteed then please let me know, I would rather that than the whole hassle of taking it in.

TLDR: My PS4 keeps ejecting discs, it has for months. I bought my PS4 15 months ago with no warranty, is it too late to take it back?

CGA is heavily sided in favor of the consumer, should be no problem to make a claim within first 3 years for a console.

They should really start giving reasonable length warranties without having to pay though...

To a certain degree they are in favour of the consumer, but there are good reasons for this. It is the consumer who has paid good money for the product, so should expect it to last for a reasonable period of time, which is usually well beyond the warranty period. I think that warranty time periods for consumers should be removed, as they potentially mislead consumers over their rights as to how long a product should last for. Many consumers still think that the warranty period, is how long the product should last for.

So...

I just went to the Warehouse and was told because it is out of the 12 months I need to get in touch with Sony and might have to pay $315 or something. Is this correct???

No, that's not correct. You're covered under the CGA and it's the retailer's responsibility - not the manufacturer's - to set it right.

For what it's worth, my console started doing this a couple months after I got it. Would do this every month or so, and a power off would fix it. After a bit of research, I found discussion of a screw to the left side of the console (visible when you remove the HDD cover) which can be tightened. I tried tightening mine, but the thread appeared to be stripped, as the screw kept turning without getting tighter. I assumed the problem would resurface in another month, but the last occurance I had was in August.

I also noticed that the PS4 would beep if you applied pressure to the rubber nub on the bottom of the console (the one directly under the eject button), and wondered if this was the cause of the ejects. I had heard that other users had solved the eject problem by using the vertical stand. I didn't want to do this, so I got a couple of pieces of wood to elevate the console so this rubber nub was not touching anything. But a month after doing this, the eject problem returned, so it may have been a red herring (although I still keep it elevated).

I've been keeping detailed notes of all issues with my console (there's been a couple), and intend to pursue CGA resolution if the disc eject problem happens again. I was considering claiming my worn thumbsticks under warranty last year (another widely reported problem), but took a more pragmatic approach of replacing them with aluminium ones instead. This wasn't without a few heart stopping moments though, and until last night I thought I'd broken the touchpad gesture functionality. But it all seems to be good now. :-)

All in all, I really dig my PS4. But the build quality really leaves a lot to be desired. Also, what were they thinking with a 500GB HDD? Took less than a year to fill that sucker up. Thankfully upgrading to a 2TB HDD was a trivial exercise. The hardest part being locating a 2TB 2.5" drive, as everyone is moving to SSD these days.

The lady at the Warehouse said apparently there was something in the T+C when I purchased the PS4 that after the 12 month warranty I have to deal with the manufacturer not the retailer. Basically the way I interpreted it was "After 12 months it isn't our problem you need to contact Sony".

$315 though? I didn't expect to pay a single cent. She had a list of the PlayStation consoles and the price it costs to fix them. Now she did say it probably wont be $315, but that is the price she quoted me and the one she had written down.

Anyway, as mentioned above, I didn't expect to pay a single cent.

I really thought the CGA would cover me, 14-15 months is not a good amount of time. To be fair I probably should of taken the console in when it started ejecting the discs 6 months ago, but still.

Should I now contact Sony and see what they say?

The lady at the Warehouse said to contact Sony, they will send a courier bag/box.

Hmmmmm

Not happy. Just thought I could walk into the Whouse, they would take it and send it off, get repaired and then I would pick it up.

Cheers mate. Yes like you I tried the power off "fix", also holding down the power button waiting for 3 beeps etc. I also have read about the loose screw, however I do not want to open it all up.

That is a good idea keeping a log of problems, I should of done the same. I have posts on various forums stating my problems, but nothing written down. When did you buy your PS4 and where from?

The CGA is clear that it's the retailer's responsibility, and it's illegal to contract out of the CGA. The Warehouse lady is lying to you in the hope that you'll go away.

There's nothing stopping you from contacting Sony if you wish, but there's no guarantee that you won't be charged a fee.

Go back and try again. Claim that the CGA covers your situation for free. If they still won't help ask to speak to a manager, remind them that by not helping you they are breaking the law.

I purchased mine from JB Hi-Fi. Got one in the second batch of consoles, so I still have about 5 days left on my 12 month warranty. This log is there just in case the problem resurfaces after this period expires, but also to serve as documentation about the problem, as it's not one that you can demonstrate in-store (due to the power off fixing it).

The plan was to take video of it the next time it happened. But (touch wood), it hasn't happened again. Also, I wouldn't be scared about attempting to tighten the screw. The HDD bay cover is designed to be removed, and the screw is designed to be user accessible (its primary purpose is to allow users to eject stuck discs). If you use the instructions here as a guide, you should be OK.

Thanks for the reply. I did mention the CGA and she still said you need to contact Sony because it is out of the 12 month warranty. I didn't know that it was illegal to contract out of the CGA as Behodar mentioned.

I'd be curious to know how this ends up. Hopefully you get a positive result and TWH actually help. It always helps to print out some CGA quotes and info to take in with you and show them how they can't contract out.

I don't have the time to go back into the store over the next few days so I will send the Warehouse a message and hopefully they will get back within the next couple of days.

Will keep everyone updated...
