Can I really get VDSL? Vodafone says Yes (and new router?)

I’m currently on Vodafone's ADSL2 plan and my vodafone station 2 is starting to drop ethernet, requiring to be reboot or reset.

I have a wired network (located in the garage) so I’m looking at replacing the vodafone station 2 with:

Draytek Vigor 130 modem (I have)

Ubiquiti Networks EdgeRouter ER‑X $114.95 or

Ubiquiti EdgeRouter Lite $219.95

Ubiquiti Networks UniFI AP AC LR

I get the following speeds with the Draytek Vigor 130

(Setup: master filter - Signet ST2206 - patch cable - 20m Cat5e - patch cable - Draytek - desktop)

Mode ADSL2+ Annex

State SHOWTIME

Up Speed 996000

Down Speed 12392000

SNR Margin 6

Loop Att. 31

Ookla speed test

You need a HG659 for VDSL support, The one you have supports ADSL2+

I wouldn't expect to get VDSL2 performance that'll be significantly different to your current ADSL2+ with such high attenuation.

Thanks sbiddle, I thought that might be the case. What attenuation do you need to make the change? (Chorus has arrow pointing to "potential connection" VDSL and fibre is coming 2020?.

Thanks thecatsgoolies, yep the Station 2 is on it way out and I'm replacing it with the Draytek. I just need a new router and access point now.

I move the Draytek Vigor 130 into the patch panel to see if removing 20m of cat5e between the master filter and the modem made any difference to the attenuation.

(Setup: master filter - Signet ST2206 - patch cable - Draytek - 20m Cat5e - patch cable - desktop)

As long as your internal wiring is sorted, attenuation is essentially a product of the length of the line. The only way you will lower it is to move house.

Afraid so.

The problem appears to be outside your house.

A loop attenuation of 31dB (with a master filter and good quality hardware) suggests that you have a line length greater than 2km.

Thanks, I live 1.7 driving km from the main Titirangi exchange, I was being hopeful with the "potential connection VDSL" on the Chorus web site. I will try using the Signet ST2206 test point and bypass the master filter when the family go off line tonight.

Two years ago (before the VDSL band profile was changed from 997 to 998) I was officially in the VDSL zone, and so I tried VDSL.

The experiment was not a success.

Using a Draytek Vigor 130 modem and Ubiquiti EdgeRouter Lite with a new VDSL master filter and a dedicated Cat6 lead to new J45 socket, I only got VDSL speeds of about 4/12 Mbps.

I was able to go back to ADSL without penalty.

Even with the new 998 bandplan, I don't fancy your chances with a line length of 2km plus.

I had the same issues as you so decided to go to vdsl, i had the constant connection drops which never got resolved.

Gone to vdsl and got 3mbs in speed boost

You have confirmed your high loop attenuation. Forget VDSL.

If you buy a Ubiquiti EdgeRouter Lite, you will need a switch as well (I already had a good switch).

The advantage of the Ubiquiti EdgeRouter ER‑X (apart from the lower price) is that it has 5 ports, so you may not need a switch (depending upon your home setup).
