Hi,

I have been testing my Fibre300 connection and I get a faster downlod speed when I go through my Netgear 8 port switch - which is obviously connected to my Huawei router - than I do plugging my computer directly into the router. 80-90Mbps vs 50-60Mbp

?!?

You've got other issues if that is all you get.

You should be reaching 300/100Mbit (or there abouts) and not those sorts of speeds. You need to explain how you're testing, what device and what kind of switch too.

This sounds like you're testing on an older or underpowered device with only a 100Mbit port or have a faulty Ethernet cable.

What michael said, but also check you are not inadvertanly using a crossover or partially wired cable. Many cables have only 2 pairs in them because they were supplied with old DSL routers with only 100 meg interfaces on them. Using those between gig devices can often have weird negotiations happen that lead to a duplex mismatch and loads of false collisions slowing things down. The fact that you're not getting anywhere near the proper speeds points to something only negotiating 100 megabit port speed, and the cable is an often cause of that.

Hi michaelmurfy!

Yes you're absolutely right. It took me a while to realise that my ethernet adapter/hardware is only rated to 100, which explains why I can't go above 100.

Skinny told me how to connect my PC directly to the ONT and test - and when I did this I hade close to 100 for both upload and download.

But my question is really why on earth would I see slower speeds when directly connected to my router compared to when I connect to the router through a switch!

Hi richms, thanks for your response.

I've been testing this all day. At leatst 6 times and have always had the problems described in the OP. But i've just tested again using the same patch cord on the switch that I was always using on the router and miraculously up and down are both around 80 or 90. This only after I brought up the problem with Skinny and did a PC-ONT direct test. Suspicious much? And I hate conspiracy theories.

Switch is a Netgear GS108, router is a Huawei HG659 supplied by Skinny. I've been constantly restarting things before testing - ONT, router, switch, PC - unplugging everything else from all devices, and I don't even use the wifi on my router - it's turned off.

I'm going to monitor and I'll post back if problem comes back.

:)

For all the crap it gets I've had no problem pulling gigabit speeds from HG659.

HG659 is basically in ol’ reliable status now. It had other issues but pulling gigabit was not one of them.
