First question: Has anyone experienced a Linksys WRT54G crapping out around 5 minutes in to use?

I did, and I'm currently on a reduced speed connection right now! Thought it was Vodafone's fault, but nope, using the connection straight from the MT882 was perfect.

The whole connection will just break off suddenly for sometimes 2 minutes at a time and start again. The LAN connection to the router does "appear" but logging in to the router fails. But now the outages are getting more frequent and now in 5 minutes of starting it up after a long rest.

Second question: What would be a good replacement for a WRT54G (or even both my MT882 and WRT54G)?

It has to be under $130-ish though (for modem + router)

Looking at a Dynalink RTA1025W... that's quite good apparently.

What model of WRT54G is it? Look on the underside of the device for a sticker that says: WRT54G vX.Y. Alternatively post the first 4 characters of the serial number.

Unless its a version 5 or newer you can upgrade to custom firmware (Tomato or DD-WRT) which really improves the performance, stability and features of the device.

It's a Version 7. The one and only.

I was already interested in getting DD-WRT on there... found out that we got the unfortunate one. And I didn't buy it (neither was it actually purchased here)

It's not getting too hot is it? I know there were some reliability issues with some of these routers if they had insufficiant airflow.

It never got hot, just warm.

I even put a fan on top (just for fun really.)

Plugged in my DSL-504T for now

I think it might have been a packet overload... I haven't looked at any logs, but when my cousin's Mac Boot Camp turns on, the lights go flashing like mad. I'll try to have another go tonight.

Might have to have a word with him... especially about Windows security.
