There is no reason why they couldn't put in a headphone jack. Battery not blocking it as far as i can see.

It has more to do with the iPhone 8 and Apple not wanting generic ports, hence more control over their products Especially as apples own Bluetooth headphones sound no better than the old ones.

Sorry if this has been asked already, but is there an iPhone 7 lightening adaptor on the market yet that has an audio plug plus the the ability to charge the phone at the same time. I am thinking of my car audio where I plug into the aux on the audio head and also charge via the cig lighter at the same time with my old iPhone 4.

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

I think belkin has one.

I think what you're supposed to do in this situation is fix your car, as obviously its broken by not having bluetooth as everybody knows that bluetooth is the only way that audio should be delivered nowadays. </sarcasm>

The Belkin thing is a dual-lightning port adapter. You'll need a 3.5mm dongle as well, for the time being.

It's really great that you can start your car and the bluetooth audio auto connects, then you just have to press the big button on the adapter once to start playing exactly from where you left off.

All done within 3 seconds or so, while you can leave your phone in your pocket if it still has plenty of charge. The audio quality on it is also great with zero drops.

Many people have said the new Lightning EarPods sound better than the old 3.5mm ones. (And presumably the AirPods although you can't buy them yet.)

The lightning port is Apple's only current example of a proprietary port, they are big on open standards like Thunderbolt and USB-C

They should be exactly the same, because the lightning port is just outputting an analgue audio into the lightning earbuds. So it should be no different.

The airpods actual earbuds part that produce the sound are no different to the included earpods, so the sound quality should be no better than with the included lightning earpods.

Apple have a history of creating proprietary ports. Prior to the lighting connecting connection was their own 30 pin connector. I have an old apple monitor (non thunderbolt) that has it's own powerbrick, where the cables only work with apple cable connectors.

Apples dislike of proprietary connections is no better shown, than with their new airpods. Nowhere do they say that they are bluetooth , instead they are marketed as using their own W1 chip. But in reality this is just bluetooth, as they can work with other brands of phone.

Correct, Lightening is digital only. The DAC is built into the connector for the headphones.

Sound testing has confirmed that the new lightning based wired headphones offer a slightly degraded sound over the previous generation wired earbuds via the 3.5mm jack.

And Bluetooth, currently, does not yet match wired for sound quality (all other things being equal).

Traditionally, when Apple have been pioneers and removed functionality, they had something better to replace it with.

This time, not so.

But, hey, they can up-sell you some fancy looking new earpods or Beats headphones to compensate.
