As of l2 days ago, no Southern California stores had iPad inventory. All will tell you to schedule an appointment for a sale, with a pick-up date about 5-8 days out. That is the same delay you see when ordering at the US Apple Store.

marmel:
Yeah I see the new iphone has problems with the reception and the advice from Steve Jobs has been "don't hold it that way" which is ridiculous really.

Are you kidding? I'd *love* to be able to give that kind of answer...

Random person: Hey Steve, your phone sucks if you hold it this way!
Almighty Steve: Then don't hold it that way.

Random person: Hey Salty, your [whatever] sucks when you use it this way!
Mythical Salty: Then don't use it that way.

Reminds me of the old joke -

A man walks into a doctor's office, and says,
"Doctor, you gotta help me, it really hurts when I do this!" and demonstrates.
The doctor answered, "Then stop doing that."

Good times.

Oh, and for thread relevance: my iPad on 2degrees 3G rocks. :-P

I did read on a apple insiders site last night that there may be a software fix for the iphone 4 reception problems coming.

Seems bizarre that they could fix that with a firmware update but who knows.

They will probably just change the reception bars to read full all the time, hey problem solved!

It sounds like the baseband processing software is being changed to make better decisions on radio channels to select.

i got mine a few days ago via a friend in Australia. took about 2 weeks from ordering until i got it in Wellington.

Must admit i am loving it - and truthfully wasnt expecting to.

I probably wouldnt have bought one - and got it in exchange for some design work for some iphone/ipad apps - but i am thoroughly glad i got it now and have fallen in love with the simplicity and elegance of it.

there are still some things i dont like - i am absolutely gobsmacked that apple wont allow tethering between iphone and ipad. that makes absolutely no sense to me - and ultimately the reason i will jailbreak my 3GS as soon as the jailbreak for my bootrom comes out (few weeks i guess).

also note that to get 3G on it you will have to buy a whole new data plan (like the t-sticks) and thats $50-$59 /month just for 2 gigs on both Voda and XT.

sorry i realize i am rambling - ultimately just find a friend living in the states and have it sent to them :)

when you get it look at:

- todo
- weather hd
- dashboard (must jailbreak first tho)
- air display
- ibooks (amazingly good - especially since you can drag and drop your pdf ebooks right into the app in itunes - this is likely to be my main use for this).
- pages
- numbers.

things that dont work well:

- facebook app (not ipad ready yet - website works ok but no chat features).
- TVNZ - still not ipad ready
- tomtom - it works but iphone size.

oh and also - you can sync all your old iphone apps over without repurchasing, which is quite nice.

cool. might have to get one off ebay then.

as for tethering with iPhone thats a pity - jailbreak for iOS 4 is out for the 3GS already and I use an app called MyWi 4.0 - works very well.

im probably going to get an Ipad 3G though - the 500MB plan on XT prepaid is fantastic (pay for only as much as you use.. if you dont use, you dont pay anything).

Why can't you just use a standard prepaid XT data SIM??

They use a Microsim card !!
You can get microsim adapters to be able to put them in normal size sim slots however.

Cutting down a normal SIM does work - we tried it. And at $5 for a SIM, you can afford to muck it up once or twice.

Ok - so I have purchased a new 2 degrees sim card, charged it up with the $6 for 50mb deal, chopped the Sim up to fit into the Ipad - all works a treat. Performance on the 2 degrees network is pretty good in Wellington.

My problem is that to charge up the sim with another 50mbs for $6 - I need to text 2 degrees, which of course you cant from the Ipad - and now the Sim won't fit back into my phone. Would be ideal if you could select the data plan from 2 degrees web site, but you can't.

Does anyone have any suggestions ?

Thanks
Andrew
