codyc1515: I'm with them right now, mid-contract, and was looking to purchase it outright. Of course, to terminate the contract would cost me (aka. pay them) around $150 or so vs. the (very roughly) $30 or so I estimate they would make.

A slightly different situation then, but again, as you have (most likely) already had a phone subsidised from them and aren't wanting to extend your contract theres no real incentive for Vodafone to sell you one ahead of a customer who's happy to take out a 2 year contract.

If you're happy to pay full price, why not order online from Apple and save yourself the hassle and uncertainty?

It is going to be a hassle considering it takes at least 45 mins to get to the store from where I am right now (Palmerston). I think that will be the best option, only problem is the shipping. If I order it on or around the day (10/11th) and it takes the full two weeks (or more...) to ship (around the 29th) that could be problematic as I am heading up back north again on that date.

codyc1515: Well then they just lost a sale, unless someone such as johnr can clarify.

I'm sure you'll agree that they'd prefer to sell them with a contract rather than sell you one and take the risk that you'll head off to another carrier. As I'm sure they won't have more iPhones than they have people wanting them at first they'll want to supply them to people taking contracts. Profit margin probably isn't great enough to just be happy with any sale. I could be wrong though, thats just the way I see it which is why I placed my order direct with Apple online.

I'm with them right now, mid-contract, and was looking to purchase it outright. Of course, to terminate the contract would cost me (aka. pay them) around $150 or so vs. the (very roughly) $30 or so I estimate they would make off selling me the phone. Like I said earlier in the thread the people at store we're clueless. They weren't even sure what time the store was opening!

I plan on going in on Friday and seeing what happens, even though I won't be signing up on a new contract.  Just don't be too upset if they are only selling to new/resigned contracts as a means of restricting stock shortages.

As for the Vodafone stores not knowing the details, keep in mind that the iPhone isn't a Vodafone product.  The release of details and the availability are dictated by Apple.

What I would do is get your order in now then. I ordered mine yesterday and have a delivery estimate of between 14/11 and 21/11. That maybe a little later by now but at least you will be on the list. If you can get to a shop and get one sooner, cancel your order with Apple online, they don't charge you until they dispatch.

This is kind of why I'm suggesting you get yourself prepared for the worst. At least that way you might be pleasantly surprised

Unless Apple ships early (before 11th) that shouldn't be a problem as they don't charge you when you pre-order, but charge when they dispatch.

Shouldn't be a problem for you as Apple doesn't charge until they ship the order.  Since it seems unlikely any order placed with Apple at this point will be shipped on the 11th, you shouldn't be caught short by them.  As mentioned, if you happen to get into town before Apple ships your order then you can cancel and not be charged.

Yeah, sounds like the best option for me. I will hopefully be ordering it with the Apple Online Store.

Just making these suggestions to hopefully save you some disappointment on Friday if Vodafone so no to outright sales. The sooner you get your order in the sooner you will see it?

Out of interest, which one are you looking at getting?

codyc1515: Also a few things:
  • Apple is yet to confirm which local resellers will have the phone.
  • It has increased the number of mobile operators selling its iPhones overseas, sparking speculation it could do the same here:
    • Telecom declined to comment on whether it would have the device.
    • 2degrees spokesman Michael Bouliane said it did not have immediate plans to offer the iPhone.

I contacted Apple when they sent the release out and posted the reply a couple of pages back. They have not announced mobile operator partners yet, unlike previous years when the release mentioned Vodafone specifically.

For others reading this thread, since codyc1515 made his mind (as per previous posts on this page):

codyc1515:
Teeps: I expect Vodafone (and Telecom if they get it) to require contracts at first, after all theres no incentive for them not to. If you want one without contract at least we can do it direct from Apple right from the start this year.

Well then they just lost a sale, unless someone such as johnr can clarify.

What? Makes no sense. If you want no contract, just go and buy from Apple online. Pre-order now. And usually they are a bit cheaper than the Vodafone price anyway.

Hi team. What colour would you buy for a woman? I like the black, but I have a habit of buying gifts for my wife that I want, any recommendations?

ps. my wife is Chinese
pps. if I use our Apple ID to order it, will she be notified (that would spoil the Christmas surprise somewhat)

I would hope that you're the one who knows your wife better than a bunch of guys on a forum! I don't think a colour is specific to either sex, I'd look at what else she owns, but probably best to look at what she bought for herself you you have a tendency to get it so wrong.
