Paul1977: Back in March I predicted NZ$1799 for the 42mm Black Stainless Steel, which would have been an insanely expensive price. However, not as insanely expensive as the actual NZ$1949 that it is.

Umm it is simple math:

U.S. Price for Black SS 42mm - $1099 USD

Convert to NZ dollars at current exchange rate of 65c:, then add 15% GST = $1944 NZD

This means Apple is making a whole $5 premium on the NZ version - OH THE HORROR!!!

Why does an insane US price make the NZ price any less insane?

Answer: it doesn't - NZ$1949 for a watch that will be outdated in less than a year is insane.

I appreciate the condescension though.

You realise there are literally hundreds of stainless steel watches from dozens of different brands that cost several thousand dollars?

And guess what - all those other premium stainless steel watches do is tell the time. You buy an Apple watch and in ten years time it will still be able to tell the time, as well as do a whole lot more. Saying it will be "outdated" is completely meaningless.

I have a first generation iPod nano - and guess what: a decade later it still does exactly what it did the day I bought it. is it outdated compared to todays models? absolutely! does it fail in its job to do the same things i bought it to do? absolutely not!+

reading posts like yours will be absolutely hilarious in 5 years time.

I agree. I could buy a NZ$5000 TV tomorrow, it will be outdated in probably six months as the next model arrives. Methinks the TV stuff may continue to keep operating....

It all comes down to your priorities and your likes and dislikes. I'm wearing a watch based on technology from the 18th century so it's been out of date for who knows how long. I'm happy with that and I spent more on it than is quoted. I haven't had to do anything with my watch in the 8 years I've owned it (although I should have had it services).

The difference is that an Apple watch is likely to be designed around the assumption that the owner will want to replace it within a few years, whereas a genuine quality product like a Seiko or Tissot will be designed around the assumption that the owner may well want to keep it for a lifetime.

I would probably buy an Apple watch if I were wealthy, but the reality is that my iPhone, iPad and MacBook Pro are costing me a fortune in depreciation so I don't want to own any more of their products.

Yes got the same as you, 42mm sport grey with black strap.
I don't think demand will be massive in NZ but I won't be surprised if shipping dates slip a bit for later orders.

Cheers,
Joseph

I dont want to rain on anyone purchase joy but after looking around for an activity monitor I considered many smart watches and devices. It would seem to me that a reasonable
Entry point for a competent smart watch would be around $300, sort of akin to a good digital watch. The price of the entry level Apple devices seem high.
There is no doubt that they are well built and will cooperate with the iPhone very well but $599 is a high price for an entry watch.

Given what have said above what is the primary motivator for those here that are purchasing, and yes I am genuinely interested. Some feedback now and impressions when you have your
watch would be great.

Thanks in advance

MikeB4: but $599 is a high price for an entry watch.

Entry level is very much brand dependent. The entry level Rolex is probably about $9k. Lexus and Toyota's are very similar but the Lexus will have a much higher entry point for its brand. To an extent, a high price is a form of marketing and brand differentiation.

I wasn't thinking Brand entry but more market sector, but yes you are correct.

I do a lot of running and currently use MapMyRun with my iPhone in an armband. It's not ideal because I can't see the screen while it's attached to my arm and there is a bit of delay between pressing the 'start' button and attaching it to my arm, but this isn't enough of an annoyance to want to spend $300 on a watch let alone $600.

Admittedly I hate clutter so tend to talk myself out of buying things I don't absolutely need.

Yes, but the difference is a quality precision watch bought 5, 10, or 15 years ago is virtually the same as one bought today. I would imagine that in 5 years time when rereading my post there will be very few people still wearing a 1st gen Apple Watch.

Things like smartphones (and now smart watches) are outdated far faster than standard standard watches (or even standalone music players like your iPod Nano) - in that the next model is noticeably superior and has multiple new functions. I'll concede that 1 year is probably too early to say it will be truly outdated, but I don't see how the use of the word "outdated" is meaningless.

You are correct that it does far more than a standard quality watch, but it is also designed to have a much shorter useful lifespan.

The price of the Sports model I think is reasonable, the problem is they look pretty cheap with a suit or dress shirt. It's the ridiculous premium for the stainless case, sapphire glass, and stainless strap that I have the real problem with.

The TVs core function is viewing. New models often offer new supplemental features, but the core function is largely unchanged. Smarts phones and smart watches, I would argue, don't have a single core function like TVs do. So while a TV model is superseded quickly, I believe that it isn't truly outdated for a much longer time.

People who use a lot of the Smart features may disagree with me that it's core function is still simply viewing.

At some point, the device will fail, completely. Lithium batteries and flash memory both have quite short life expectancies.
