About a dozen people queuing outside the Plaza Palmerston North. Well, I say queue. It's more of a huddle. Both Telecom and Vodafone inside, so it's hard to say who's here for who. Staff inside peering out curiously...

Amazing! Strolled into Telecom, almost done. No probs. but Vodafone are still closed, big queue of grumpy people. LOL!

Just one thing to consider folks...

When I moved from Windows Mobile 6.5 to Windows Phone 7 I also changed my data plan from 250MB to 500MB. And when I updated my handset from Windows Phone 7 to Windows Phone 7.5 I again doubled my data plan to 1GB.

The reason behind this is because I knew the new OS would use more data, I would use more data and things would get out of control.

The same thing with iOS5. You will use more data at some point. If you buy a handset on a plan and sign a term contract, make sure you can at some point change plans to something larger. If your operator won't allow it, then consider yourself warned...

I've been in at least half a dozen times over the past 2 days to talk to someone about porting but they've all been busy. I detest queuing for anything so I just have to be patient ;-)

So bought my Black iPhone 64gb at the Wellington Willis (launch store) last night, wasn't my first choice as I was hoping to get a white one (goes well with my Macbook). The guys at Telecom were excellent though and put me on the waitlist for white at the time, but they didn't have any in stock by the time I got inside so I ended up buying a black one (outright on prepay).

Woke up this morning and thought I would take my chances on trying to secure a white at the Telecom Lambton Quay store, so popped down at 8:30 in the morning and to my surprise was first in the queue...! Telecom staff popped out a few mins before opening time and did the usual, sorted out the queue and asked people what phones/plans they wanted.. I wasn't able to swap with my phone from Willis so ended up buying two phones in the end (one black, one white).

Interestingly speaking to the guys at Lambton Quay store they mentioned they only had 2x white 64gb in stock at opening, so they're quite rare it seems (might want to order direct from apple or try ordering from Telecom/Vodafone onsite if you're looking for one of these models.

Now at Telecom Willis Street store waiting for the refund to go through for my black phone (it's over the $1000 refund limit at the store), luckily for one guy up the front of the queue 64gb black was the one he wanted so managed to sort out a win-win agreement, with me getting my phone and he gets his one aswell. :)

Telecom staff have been excellent (particularly Alisha who had to deal with the hairy issue of the refund) when dealing with you once you get to talk to one, I've been very impressed with their service over the last day. Great work guys!

Blacks (and definately whites) are definately not in stock at Willis. Lambton Quay might have some, but you'd better get down quick and find out as there was a decent crowd building when they opened @ 9am.. Just ask the guy when they come round to sort out your place in the queue, they'll be able to give you an update on stock availability.

Thats a good point. Siri will make sure of that

I checked with Telecom, and no surprises, you can upgrade to a larger plan without any kind of penalty if you need more data. I think on Vodafone, you are fixed to the plan for 24 months, and can't move up or down.

Turns out they're not closed. They're just letting people in one at a time. So they usher a person in, and bring the barrier down, leaving a queue of people outside waiting while they serve the one customer. Telecom, however, managed to cope with the influx quite well. They got through about a half dozen people in about 20 minutes, no fuss at all. Our purchase was a breeze, walked out feeling a little sorry for the unlucky Vodafone hopefuls...

The store in Palmy is very small compared to the Telecom one, about a quarter of the size.
