I am a new customer to 2 Degrees as of today, coming from Vodafone/One NZ after 15+ years. It hasn't been the most seamless switchover for a few reasons (Store ran out of eSIM's (seriously?!?), iMessage/facetime activation issues, not able to swap eSIM to new mobile without new QR Code- which also requires a physical visit to store... etc.)

While on VF/One, I was able to disable my global roaming on my account, and then use the mobile data off my secondary sim while overseas to essentially use the VoWifi functionality, but without needing wifi. VF made it reasonably easy to disable global roaming.

I can't seem to see any information from 2 degrees show if roaming is enabled, or how I could disable it on my account. Has anyone done this?

NB: I want to disable via the provider as opposed to any software settings for the sake of comfort I'm not going to rack up a massive bill.

@Aaroona I am sure you could call 2degrees on 200 and request they disable roaming on your mobile number

Roaming is enabled by default

The issue with imessage activation is not on the 2degrees side and this will work after sometime

If it's bill shock you're worried about, you can also set a spend control. It used to be a minimum of $10. Not sure if you can do $0 now (the part I look after will, but self-care itself might not).

How do you get the "mobile data for vowifi" functionality to work? Is it just not having roaming enabled? I've travelled with NZ sim (with wifi calling enabled) and overseas SIM (with data enabled) and not achieved what I'm understanding from your question. Thanks

I managed to call 2D this morning, and initially they said it was not possible to disable global roaming from their end and to “either leave the sim at home when travelling, or stay in airplane mode”

But after discussing with their supervisor, they were able to find the option and disabled it, so only time will tell.

I am not sure if it does work with 2D, but worked fine with Vodafone/One. Essentially you enable WiFi calling on your primary sim. Enable VoLTE in your travel sim. Enable data on your travel sim. And then the primary sim eould connect and show “OneNZ using mobile data”.
I will be heading to AU later this year, so will test it then for 2D.

But I used this setup extensively while in Spain last year with One and it worked very well.

To do what you want you need a local SIM in a pocket wifi hotspot and leave your phone in airplane mode and connected to that poket wifi

This is not true for when on Voda/One.
It may be for 2D, but definitely worked without a hotspot.
I used a physical sim (vodafone) and my travel eSIM. And I used my mobile (text and calling) without being charged roaming.

What you describe works fine on 2degrees with 'Data roaming' disabled on your handset. Have been overseas with 2degrees with no trouble with 2degrees SIM data roaming disabled and foriegn SIM mobile data enabled. Fair enough to have it disabled on the network end. You should have no trouble now. No need for a pocket wifi hotspot -- not sure where that idea came from.

I was making phone calls and texts (not iMessage) using my Vodafone account. When I am on a desktop I will post a link here about it. It’s not a commonly known feature, but it definitely works as I describe.

Not when roaming for 2+ months. It’s a considerable cost to maintain contact with people locally, or family members that don’t use WhatsApp, messenger, etc. which can be solved with this reasonably simple feature.
Ultimately not debating the value each of us might derive from it, but rather was asking about disabling roaming, which I’ve done now :)

Some phones support doing VoWiFi over a second SIM -- recent Samsung models for example. Feature is called 'Auto data switching' apparently and when enabled with Wifi Calling it routes VoWiFi of one SIM over the data network of the other SIM. I suspect OP is referring to this. Quite a clever feature.

Yeah, my S23U does this, "Auto data switching and backup calling". I've had moments where I'm out of signal on my 2D SIM, but the One NZ SIM has data, and my 2D calls/txts go out over the One data connection.
