mattwnz: I think it will be good for Orcons future for sky to buy it, as they are one of the more valuable companies on the stock exchange, so potentially have more money to pump into it. I would prefer sky to buy it than another ISP, which will reduce competition.

Generally, I'm fairly neutral, but if I was forced to give an opinion I'd much sooner a company like 2degrees taking over Orcon than Sky (i.e. the previous rumour/conjecture thread) simply because the no loss-of-competition argument technically still applies and technically to a greater point because it still encourages Sky to play fair with multiple ISPs in a multi-tech/multi-LFC/multi-ISP country (Personally I hate the Com Com more than companies not playing fair in the first place ;)).

There seems to be a lot of cloak and daggers (or media playing connect the dots) on the subject, so I'm ready to hear anything.  Although seeing Orcon with Sky style advertising in a year or two would certainly be a bit a shock to the system wouldn't it - especially after the KDC ads.

Yes I would prefer 2D to buy it too, as it will probably make them a stronger company by them being able to offer bundled services like the other two mobile providers.

What I don't understand is why sky channels seem to have more ads then free tv does. If you're PAYING for tv it shouldnt be full of ads. For example, free spotify has ads but paid doesnt

^That's my biggest complaint.  That and the lack of flexibility around channel packages.

The self promotion Sky does especially on Nat Geo, History and UK Knowledge is very irritating, but the most annoying is that most of their channels are just a repeat fest, so you are paying for the same stuff over and over and over again.

The self promotion is going in advertising slots that broadcasters would otherwise sell to real advertisers. Blame them on Nat geo and discovery etc. Not sky's fault and Imo the promos for other shows are better than being bombarded with steam mops and vacuum cleaners like fta tv is full of.

Sky buying Orcon (or any other telco) would be bad for some NZer's IMO. Sky have proven they are slow to change and dinosaurs in technology (the way they are holding on to the traditional pay tv model is proof) - that combined with their iron fist content deals stifles competition here and the only future competition was going to come from on demand services in the next 5 or so years. Sky buying an ISP would keep NZ TV in the same position we are in right now. A monopoly with a crap offering.

Back in the good old days, SKYWATCH - that magazine you never ever read, was an optional extra. You could cancel it and save $5 a month.

They got rid of that and now it is just part of your bill, you can't remove it.

The lack of flexibility is common to all cable/satellite companies - look at the states for similar arguments. Why offer a la carte when your customers have no other option.

SKY TV's online offerings are moving ahead with SKYGO, but are still miles behind the rest. If I could access my SKY TV content in HD reliably using either my PC or my Roku I would be a happy camper. As it is their website is great if you enjoy mosaic style sport or 320x240.

Well if an ISP is moving into the content distribution/broadcast arena (Spark), it's only fair that a broadcaster moves into the ISP market.  Isn't it?  What's good for the goose is good for the gander as the phrase goes.

Will we as consumers be better off for it?  That's what I'd like to know.  Perhaps Sky have decided that if people are going to download/stream content they may as well make some money from it.

Procrastination eventually pays off.

Competition though would fix that. Remember Air NZ before Ansett came in. Their terminals were just old air craft hangers. But when ansett came in with a new modern terminal, Air NZ were forced to upgrade all their terminals.
The advantage sky has at the moment is they have most of the top content, including most sports. But their delivery network is an old format. I believe at least some paytv networks overseas have moved into the ISP game.

That would be worse than Sky.

Is 2 Degrees still in the picture ?

My Preference would be 2D, then Sky. Not sure about another ISP, as it does potentially reduce competition, but the market may have too many ISPs anyway, so consolidation maybe needed. It is all media speculation though, the CP speculation was in stuff or the NZ herald.

Why should we have to pay $70 or $80 a month to be able to watch our country play rugby, our national sport?

Pay per view at a fair price would be great. I think there are pay per view options at the moment but it would be cheaper just to buy a ticket to the stadium.

It should be $5 or something.  Or how great would it be if a free channel could get it
