I'm currently sticking with Orcon... for now.
Not because I'm wanting to stay and keep whining about the issues without doing anything;
But because of a couple of reasons:
Other members of my household point blank refuse to return to Telecom after some past customer services nightmares.
Also, they and I agree that broadband would probably still be really slow and expensive if not for some of the good work done in recent years by companies such as Orcon - if Telecom had their way.

Hi, same boat.  Same area.  When we started with Orcon years ago it was fast, we got a static IP and they were nice to deal with. I think we've got about one and a half of those now.

I'm not sure where Mangere Bridge fits into the exchanges.  I guess we're on Onehunga given our numbers but my line speed has gone up to the max supported by my ADSL 1 connection pretty much but throughput is so inconsistent it just unusable at any time you want to use it. That's not true; inconsistent implies it does go fast sometimes which just doesn't happen.  If I'm up early in the morning it's fairly responsive but quickly turns to crap and remains that way until it's bedtime.

I'm not moving because I can't be arsed changing stuff that my static address has access to but even that has it's limits given the happy ex Orcon surfers.

If you're from Wellington that'd be impressive.  If not .. move along. AKL is not the issue here, nor is the + plan people.  By your "Orcon to AKL" speedtest ping, I will assume you're from AKL ...

Does anyone have problems viewing photos in facebook? I know facebook is generally crap but I wonder if this is part of the Orcon international bandwidth problem?

The photos are served up from here:

Generally I don't have an issue with FB photos -- but then again I haven't been to FB for a while. Have you had issues in the past or is this recent?

I'm still with Orcon, and my speed issues may have been resolved... Too soon to say for sure though. I'll report back in a couple of weeks with results and an explanation of how and why. :)

Okay been with Orcon for a decade.

Been getting into it with them over the last couple of weeks, we are still talking but not seeing much from them.

I have 4 years of speed test results and am able to show a subjective disintegration of my up and down speed over that time. i have a grandfather max/max account with them and it is failing to deliver both in the up and down speeds.
I get 50% of my up speed now, compared to last years figures, and my down is 10% of my non peak period figures.

I will report again if I get any action.

Facebook has always been a bit iffy - but it's been getting worse lately. It does not happen when I go through our work connection.

I'm seriously considering making the switch to Telecom. Browsing the web seems ok (even though it's basically impossible to watch videos at night), but online gaming on the PS3 has taken a serious plunge lately. There are constant patches of lag which make the game virtually unplayable. This has never happened in the past and it's extremely frustrating. I've had enough.

Yeah I would have thought so too (and yep, South Auckland). Although we were cabinetised at the end of last year if that makes a difference.

You sure you not downloading something? Having a high ping to the local BRAS shows massive congestion inside the DSL network itself.
