brookz: Fix this crap internet, youtube is taking freeaking 15 - 20 mins to load a 2min video!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As discussed in PM. Your line has a fault on it and is causing CRC errors. This explains why your last mile pings are huge!

Please log a line fault with the helpdesk.

As you can see below, some of your line stats are very low. Especially the Tip to ring.

Do an Isolation test also. With a Attenuation of 34db, I would expect you to get around 12Mbit rather than 7mbit.

I assume you have an ADSL2+ modem?

Yea I have done all the tests many times, new filters, different phone jacks, and yes it is a fairly new adsl2 modem. I will give you guys a call tomorrow and log a fault.

Well, Orcon have really done a number on me.

Recently a cabinet was installed in my area and my speeds dropped badly. So Orcon moved me to the cabinet and changed my plan.

Fine.

So now I get the bill and they're charging me for local calls?! Including one just down the road for $2 for a 10 minute call. Wtf?!?

Oh, and the speed still sucks ass. You tube is like a dog and any streaming video runs slower than my dead granny. I've just come back from my fathers house and his telecom internet is like a freaking rocket despite having slightly slower connection speeds.

What a farce.

This will be a mistake. I've been changed from LLU to cabinet for the same reason, and I'm not being charged for calls. I get a credit each month for the extra that not being on LLU would have been costing me. Still get caller ID, call waiting, free local and NZ national calls (gold plan), line maintenance, and the same amount of data as previously for the same price as it was on LLU.
You should call them and get them to sort that out. I was afraid something like that would happen with me when I got changed off LLU, but it went pretty smoothly in my case.

Also, the speed is fine now that we've been swapped to EUBA.
BUBA is on the 48kbps per 15min interval per customer limit, but EUBA is on a "best effort" handover with no fixed speed guarantee from Telecom. But for whatever reason, as soon as they put me on EUBA the speed issues went away, for the most part. There are still the odd occasions when youtube vids won't stream in real time, but most of the time they do; so I'm happy. Also, on the rare times when I do torrent something, it goes insanely fast!! Like up to 2MBps, yes MBps, that's 16Mbps down.

Can you PM me some details. You shouldn't be charged for local calls. We will look into it and sort it for you.

As for the speeds, are you in Auckland? We can move you to EUBA quickly.

We are looking at starting migrations soon, to migrate all customers who can be provisioned with EUBA (new cabinets and exchanges) to EUBA.

Yeah and my take is after talking to the front line staff on multiple occasions and getting the same template responses. Is I think that the REAL problems that Orcon are having are not filtering down to the staff/ techs on the floor. So they are giving crap advise as they are not aware of the real underlying issues.

" Just buy a new router " Wow like that is going to fix your whole network? I feel like saying Why not just send me a free one if its going to fix your whole network ? It will save you tens of thousands.

I have been at 2 other friends places whom are on Orcon, this past week and they are all at a stand still in the evenings to sites like youtube.

Whats stopping me is that I have 3 phone lines and 2 internet connections with them and the hassle of actually changing them, doing the research as to what is the next best option. Plus I have only just finished with their techs and come across this forum. I believe that they should have a chance to put it right.

What I don't like is getting poor advise from help desks and believe that making this public helps other people make more informed choices and lets Orcon know that people actually care enough to voice an opinion.

I am moving buildings soon and at that time will move to another provider if things are not sorted.

I'm sure you can identify with the hassle of switching ISPs. It is a pain, consuming hours of time and, if not meticulously managed, money as well. If everybody responded to poor service by taking their business elsewhere, the net effect is New Zealand ISPs earning more money. There is a limited number of suppliers, and less than a handful of international bandwidth providers. When you get charged for breaking your contract or the cost of signing up (something that costs virtually nothing), the industry increases its collective profit.

The playbook of ISP marketing strategy in this country has become a game of "who can pitch most successfully to the malcontents?". A provider might be monitoring this forum for instance, and respond to a rise in discontent among Orcon customers by offering what appears to be a better quality connection, for about the same price as the Orcon plans, but with an administration fee when you sign up, or a lower monthly traffic allowance, or significant charges if you go over your limit, or a six-month contract, etc., etc. So Orcon customers flock to the new ISP, and after a while it's clear that it's not a bed of roses over there either, and people move along to the next "deal".

Nope, I'm going to stick with Orcon, and for as long as I'm a customer of theirs I'm going to publicly air my dissatisfaction. They will know that threads like this change the size of the collective New Zealand ISP profit pie, because those savvy enough to find forums like this will steer clear of Orcon until they sort their service out. Bad publicity is the only tool that we as consumers have at our disposal.

If and when I do shift to another ISP, I'll have nothing further to say on the matter. You may find me on one of the other forums though ;)

Maybe I've been lucky but in the last 4 years I've changed ISP 3x, each time because of a significant performance issue or problem that was taking too long to fix.

I've moved from Xnet to Telstraclear to Telecom with minimal downtime or hassle, each time I just contacted my new intended provider 10-15 days before the end of my existing billing period then after successful move rang to close my account with my ex provider.

I'm thinking about moving away from Telecom currently as we are out of contract and their current pricing (post the end of Big Time) isn't competitive for >40GB usage.

General unwillingness to change ISP when you're getting bad/poor service lets ISP's get away with it and encourages ISP's to continue as is imo.
