From Chorus, announced today...

...Chorus said that would effectively replace the entry-level UFB service it is contracted to provide under its UFB contract with the Crown, which offers speeds of 30Mbps (down) and 10Mbps (up) for $37.50, just $2.50 less. Spokesman Ian Bonnar said the government-contracted plan would still be available to any internet providers that wanted it, however.

The company will also wholesale a UFB service from July that offers download and upload speeds of 100Mbps for $50 a month, and a 200Mbps symmetric service for $65, as well as some hybrid plans costing between $45 and $60...

sbiddle: My pick is that the leeches aren't going to have the impact some people may think. Why? Because they're only interested in paying the cheapest possible price for their connection so will be with Slingshot or Bigpipe.

Suspect (and hope) you're correct here.  On the one hand I find this whole announcement a little underwhelming as on initial glance it doesn't look all that competitive in terms of pricing compared to other ISPs unlimited offerings...  On the other hand I guess that, as you say, this might help prevent the worst leechers from jumping on the bandwagon.

I certainly hope so as I'm perfectly happy with my current 125GB VDSL for $85 for now! (with an occasional data pack on the odd month for unlimited downloads from 1am-7am)

If the network does get too many people downloading how quick can Snap do something about it? Can they do anything about it?

solaybro: Looks good, more expensive than Telecom but I imagine you will get a better service. Sucks I wont be able to sign up for at least a month and a half since I'm too busy to get the install done.

I heard snap service used to be the best but then it went down hill? Im not sure

I have to give up my free South Island calling if I move to unlimited. Need to really consider my options here

Dam it Snap!! Why did you have to follow with this trend?!

America has finally figured out uncapped data isn't the way to go and are putting caps on, seems we are going the other way.

You already had unlimited nights so people with more than half a brain could use uTorrent Scheduler (or whatever torrent client they may use) to time downloads over night. And just about every cloud storage system (good ones anyway) have the ability to time uploads/downloads.

The way I see it is Telecom NZ can afford to have unlimited customers because they have loads and loads and loads (and loads) of bandwidth/resource. Can Snap really offer the same sort of service? Hopefully the butt loving leechers have already shifted to BlockedPipe so they won't affect us at peak times because they are probably the stupid ones that didn't get how unlimited nights worked.

i dont think this will be bad as people think, it's not going to attract customers from other isp's who are already on unlimited as it's more expensive and all it will do is move all the people who are on the 500GB and 1 TB plans to unlimited , so they will not be using that much more data than they are now. In fact it's quite a clever marketing ploy , they can now say they offer unlimited when in fact the big data plans were basically  unlimited except for the name. im not changing my plan because i only use 180 GB a month and i only pay $95 a month.

Common sense is not as common as you think.

I am on the 30Mbps $75 for 100GB with $15 for another 100GB.  $90.  Do I have to pay $99 for unlimited?  The only other option is $89 for 150GB and $75 for 80GB.  I still have another year to go on this contract, what happens if my internet speed gets reduced?  I am quite happy on the 200GB $90 plan.

Maybe. But on the other hand the leeches want to max their line 24/7 at maximum bandwidth with torrents and snap is the only ISP to have (and actively promote) no traffic management of any kind so I wouldn't be surprised if the leeches flock to snap now, even if it is a few bucks more.

It won't take very many people maxing out their 100Mbps ufb line to smoke snaps international capacity.

Doesn't orcon promote this, since the Comcom decision on their advertising?

Does that mean you think those with large data packs now and throw in unlimited nights haven't been running at max speed already?

Don't you think this hasn't been trialled by SNAP for some months already given the amount of data already consumed by its customers, especially on the unlimited nights etc...

All that is changing is the quantity, not the quality, unless people change up or down from their existing speed plans, but even then you probably won't notice any difference. Back when the 200/unlimited trial was on I downloaded at max speeds consistently no matter what time of the day or night I was doing it, and you can trust me in saying that it was tested extensively so that I did max out my connection over long periods of time.

As I have said a few times in the past, the performance of your connection will not change just because SNAP have unleashed an unlimited data package, providing you are on the same speed plan.

Orcon removed their fair use policy, but they have traffic management, as does every other ISP, except snap AFAIK

Unlimited is incredibly pro-consumer and it really makes me sad people are complaining.

US ISPs are awful companies which generally have regional monopolies. They also own cable networks. Therefore, they initiate data caps not because they can't support the load, but because they want to cripple cable competitors like Netflix. It's scummy and it probably wouldn't be legal here.

There are at least a dozen of NZ ISPs offering unlimited now, some for over a year. This is sustainable. The cost of equipment drops every year, it's inevitable that unlimited becomes the norm over time in a competitive market. You should be damned thankful that our good regulatory structure allows us to have a hyper-competitive ISP market.

Honestly, praising the US ISP market, now I've seen everything.

Well, good news!! But I'm really concerned about the speed if there are no traffic management.
