Allanhall: Orcon still a joke.
Chorus guy turns up and said have you got problems with the line. I said "Orcon seems to think so" But I have got a text here to say its fixed. He says Oh ?
So we do a quick speed test - 14.74 mb Auckland then
a test to paulo Alto 1.87 mb sec and LA 1.9 mb/sec
He says what do you want me to do ? Its obviously not your line if your getting almost 15 mb/sec to Auckland.
I am glad that I just did not have to go through an hour of torture with the Orcon Help desk for them to still lie to my face. ( Well I am sure the support on the ground is not aware of the larger systemic issues with Orcon. So they are not lying on purpose.
Basically my take is that Orcon have over subscribed their service and are being cheapskates on the international traffic.
I am looking around for a new provider whom can deliver a fair and honest deal.
I am supposed to be in a one year contract and I am sure there will be some hair pulling to get out of it. But frankly speaking Orcon promises one think and delivers another and I would say they are in breach of their contract.
I will post here once I have my new ISP and inform of some speed tests.

variable: Just got a call from the support team, the conclusion was Orcon in fact has international traffic congestions at peak time. There is nothing they can do about it, and I will continue to suffer until my contract ends.

That is a surprising comment, from the Network Update thread:
"Hi all,
Just wanted to share the latest developments and improvements here with you all.
We have been working on massively extending capacity over the past few months.
We have just added 9GB of international capacity, and made a few changes (hardware and interface) - and I suspect many of you have already noticed the differences.
This has been a huge body of work, and we are working hard to make our service as fast as possible.
We still have some work to do – YouTube (and other Google products) are a bit slow at times at the moment, but they'll be getting a 2.5GB boost in September. The most obvious improvement will be for YouTube, and we expect it to improve dramatically.
We will then have loads of capacity, but it's not the only aspect to performance, so (post September) we'll be keen to hear if there are services you use that aren't running as well as you expect.
We'll be paying attention to Spotify, BBC iPlayer, Netflix, and the other likely suspects, but if there is something outside this that you are using, just let us know.
We will be tuning in the meantime, but until we have finished adding capacity, tuning we do today will get quickly undone by new links.
The internet finds a way to all destinations, but sometimes this is via a convoluted path, our calling is to make these as direct as possible, this is a bit of a black art, but we have some clever folks up to the task.
We are also looking at new caches, updates to existing ones and compression technology (for streaming video sites to make them stream more often in HD with less jitter) and some innovative solutions to P2P download speeds.
In short, we are dedicated to making our network the best it can be.
We are getting some positive feedback, and it's a real fun project for the team here.
We have completed around 75% of the improvements today, with more coming over the next three months.
As always, we are keen to get your feedback, and find out if there is more we can do.
Cheers

ORCON"
So plenty being done about Youtube, Google etc as above and we certainly aren't waiting until you are out of contract before doing it.
Athlonite: does Quentin mean Gb as in Gigabits when he's saying GB (Gigabytes)
VPS and Seedbox Solutions!
Allanhall: Orcon seems to be proactive they seem to be working on getting this resolved. I have had calls from FireEngine ( I guess that name is a term to put out any "fires" criticism in public, they are looking into my situation
How ever I suspect variable is correct
"Just got a call from the support team, the conclusion was Orcon in fact has international traffic congestions at peak time. There is nothing they can do about it, and I will continue to suffer until my contract ends."
As they are being proactive I am sticking with the to see if they can actually deliver on their promise. I will update on progress

Brandonrnz: Noticed over the past few days international speeds are taking a massive hit at night...
Youtube has been painful for the past few weeks too, quite often won't stream HD, or starts fast and just stops... even in lower quality.
Here are a couple speedtest's to Sydney from today.
1:30PM
6:40PM
Really hope the connections aren't going to end up like they did earlier in the year again :S

Yeah, I was actually working from today and got the call from Orcon, speed was normal at day time due to low usage, but at night...
