AdrianD: Buttonmash:  Please disregard that message - it was posted in error and has since been nuked.  VDSL is indeed coming very soon - we have completed trials and have our first batch of VDSL routers on the way in October.

Scrap that read previous posts.

Thanks for the update, we were long over due one to be honest. Any idea when pricing for the unlimited plan on a VDSL line would be out?

Interplanetary shipments are slower now that NASA scrapped the space shuttle in favour of those Russian rockets.  XD

The hardware has custom firmware to ensure maximum performance, and needs to go through electrical compliance testing and telepermitting.  Then shipping (intra-planetary).

I work in Networks and not marketing, so I am unable to provide answers regarding BYOD and Unlimited pricing - but I'll ask the question and post any new information available.

Any idea of this will be available on Collier Avenue in Karori or is it limited by Chorus? We're 950 metres from the exchange.

Hi Foo,

The VDSL service is controlled by Slingshot, however, the availability for it at your address is controlled by Chorus. After checking the VDSL in your area, it seems that you're on the border, however, we'll need Chorus to go out there and perform a physical check.

I hope this answers your question.

Ali.

Would that be something I arrange through Slingshot once the VDSL plans are available?

Looking at the Chorus coverage map, it seems we are 30 - 40 metres out of the coverage area!

Anyway, if VDSL is a possibility, I'm very keen.

Hi Foo,

As Hamish said, when you sign up to Slingshot VDSL (when it's launched) we will send the Chorus Technician out there who'll assess whether or not we can supply you with VDSL. Although you're 30-40 metres away, it may be close enough that Chorus may be able to still get you connected. We'll need to see what the Technicians say.

Ali.

As a general rule if your line attenuation is <=8.5dB and you're in a VDSL zone then you'll be eligible.  If your attenuation is higher, you may still be eligible - might require some rewiring of your home.

[Not an official statement from Slingshot, just a guideline for those interested]

Sounds good.

Will probably just use slingshots VDSL router offering and re-sign up to a new contract or something.

Thanks Adrian for the information.

So is custom firmware a good thing? Will users be able to customise, upgrade or downgrade as they see fit. I have heard on numerous occasions users having issues with gaming and wanting to downgrade but not being able to as the router was customised from the ISP (Read Orcon).

On another note, not wanting to hijack a thread, but can we get some news on UFB, I destroyed the front garden on the weekend so getting a fibre trench to the house sorted out now would be great.

if you are near an unbundled exchange and switch to VDSL,  will it be Chorus VDSL, or is the VDSL card a slingshot/Callplus one on an unbundled DSLAM

from your post it sounds like it will be Chorus.  does that mean Slingshot don't have VDSL DSLAMs?
