Hello... Our robot found some keywords in your post, so here is an automated reply with some important things to note regarding broadband speeds.

If you are posting regarding DSL speeds please check that

- you have reset your modem and router

- your PC (or other PCs in your LAN) is not downloading large files when you are testing

- you are not being throttled by your ISP due to going over the monthly cap

- your tests are always done on an ethernet connection to the router - do not use wireless for testing

- you read this topic and follow the instructions there.

Make sure you provide information for other users to help you. If you have not already done it, please EDIT your post and add this now:

- Your ISP and plan

- Type of connection (ADSL, ADSL2, VDSL)

- Your modem DSL stats (do not worry about posting Speedtest, we need sync rate, attenuation and noise margin)

- Your general location (or street)

- If you are rural or urban

- If you know your connection is to an exchange, cabinet or conklin

- If your connection is to a ULL or wholesale service

- If you have done an isolation test as per the link above

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

I recommend you read these two blog posts:

- Is your premises phone wiring impacting your broadband performance? (very technical)

- Are you receiving a substandard ULL ADSL2+ connection from your ISP?

There are literally hundreds of different things that could be causing frequent disconnections. You should try plugging the modem directly in to a different jack-point with-out a filter on a different cable (such as the one from the phone). This pretty much isolates the jack-point, cable and filter.
You will need to try that modem elsewhere or another modem in your house to determine whether or not the modem is playing up.

Call Slingshot after doing all that so they can run their diagnostics and make some suggestions.

Good luck.

I believe the network status on the Slingshot homepage was pointing to issues in Auckland this morning. (although I could be wrong as I only opened it in passing and my memory is terrible :)

Its now showing issues in Wellington.

For starters, if this happens again check whether its the ADSL signal dropping out or only the PPP login. No troubleshooting can start (apart from switching off the router for a minute) until you check whether it has a solid ADSL signal.

Time to find a new industry!

Get a master filter installed.

Wont fix much. A master filter just isolates the DSL freq. from the phone at the closest point of entry from the road. It helps when the cust is really close to a cabinet and the modem is being unstable because of it. Belkin modems are bad for it.

If the modem is getting on, swap with someone elses good known modem for a week.

Another thing to do would be if you have access to a krone tool, punch down the connections again in the back of the jacks. Partial diss can cause drop outs.

Just a few little suggestions.

Incorrect, a master filter isolates the xDSL noise from the rest of the homes wiring, the OP has not told anyone what the wiring is like in his house so it could well be interference picked up by the wiring in the house acting like an antenna, crosstalk from an already degraded line, water etc. A properly installed master filter is the only way to be 100% sure that it's not your homes wiring causing any faults and in 99% of homes will improve xDSL performance and reliability.

For example, I live in a new house, line stats before a master filter installation showed 14.8mbit sync, after the install it's now at 19.8mbit.
