Finally!  2degrees have some competition for the Telecom + Spotify deal.
Below is the email I just got.  Hopefully this isn't just a 3 month thing, it'd be cool if it was part of the $19 combo or something like that.

We've teamed up with our friends at Google to give you access to Google Play Music free for 3 months. With Google Play Music you can upload your music library, and listen to over 25 million more songs, ad-free. Plus, you can now use your 2degrees account to purchase music, movies, apps, games, books and more from Google Play. If you have any questions on Google Play, check out our FAQ's. The Team at 2degrees

Edit: So it appears the deal isn't as great as it appears to be.  It seems to simply be a 3 month free trial.  There doesn't appear to be any discounts after that.  Disappointing.

Maybe I'll have a reason to use my mobile data.
Can anyone tell me how many MB it uses in roughly an hour?

I was excited to get this email too!.... But then read the T&C's, not eligible if you've had a subscription in the last 12 months or had a previous trial in last 12 months

Definitely not an ongoing deal - the Play Music deal is basically a one-off bonus to get you using the new Google Play payment system: 2degrees have just arranged billing with Google so your Play Store purchases will be added to your 2degrees bill rather than needing a credit card for Play.

Free sub would still be unused on mobile data connection. I already have a paid sub that's under utilised because of lack of data.

Kinda disappointing.  It would've been great to see 2degrees do plans with Google Play Music included, the same way Telecom has plans with Spotify included.

Assume Google Play Music is also Android only, where as Spotify is multi platform?

There's Google Play Music for iOS too.  https://itunes.apple.com/nz/app/google-play-music/id691797987?mt=8

A rough calculation resulted in 57MB to 144MB per hour depending on the bitrate of the music streamed, assuming a low end of 128kbps. This would match my experiences using the service in the past.

I've used Google Play Music + Spotify and can confirm that GPM uses almost 2x the data as Spotify, this is the main reason I stopped using it.

That and the fact Spark offer free Spotify ;)

Both services have "quality" options, Google ones however defaulted to the higher bitrate.
One thing that Spotify doesn't have is to stream at different bitrate depending on phone connection (wifi or otherwise)

But in the same breath, Spark's offering has permanence - the 2Degrees offering is just the stock standard Google "limited time offer". The grass is starting to look mighty green on the other side...

Anything I say is the ramblings of an ill informed, opinionated so-and-so, and not representative of any of my past, present or future employers, and is also probably best disregarded.

*Noted and amended on my post above.

We still believe this is a great offer and are proud to be the first NZ Telco to offer direct carrier billing to their customers.
