I am currently using ADSL2+ and am getting good speeds,

However I am contemplating the change to VDSL, when I look around almost all ISP's charge $10 more for VDSL
as I understand it that is to cover the cost of the master splitter of witch i already have. however Orcon charge $15 extra....

Is there any option as a existing customer to forgo the master splitter install, use my own vdsl compatible modem and not get charged the extra $15?

If you are posting regarding DSL speeds please check that

- you have reset your modem and router

- your PC (or other PCs in your LAN) is not downloading large files when you are testing

- you are not being throttled by your ISP due to going over the monthly cap

- your tests are always done on an ethernet connection to the router - do not use wireless for testing

- you read this topic and follow the instructions there.

Make sure you provide information for other users to help you. If you have not already done it, please EDIT your post and add this now:

- Your ISP and plan

- Type of connection (ADSL, ADSL2, VDSL)

- Your modem DSL stats (do not worry about posting Speedtest, we need sync rate, attenuation and noise margin)

- Your general location (or street)

- If you are rural or urban

- If you know your connection is to an exchange, cabinet or conklin

- If your connection is to a ULL or wholesale service

- If you have done an isolation test as per the link above

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

The price difference isn't just a splitter - VDSL ultimately costs more to provide than ADSL2+

Orcon are clearly charging $15 more because they believe that's the premium they perceive the product as being worth over ADSL2+. If you don't like their pricing, I'd suggest you look at another ISP.

Orcon do not support 3rd party hardware. There is nothing preventing you, but you will receive absolutely no support and I'm pretty sure they also don't give out PPP credentials so you'll need to also establish these.

If you don't have a master splitter, that causes more problems. You NEED a full install done if you're moving to VDSL.

I cant understand why it would as fiber 30 is EXACTLY the same price as ADSL

I fully understand this as I am currently using 3rd party hardware and have my PPP/SIP credentials

so ok here is my logic

A unlimited naked adsl connection is $85 vs vdsl $95; $10 difference same
However the same with SIP included is $95 vs $110; $15 difference so SIP would cost me $5/mth more just because I am on vdsl?????

as for the master splitter install I would have no problem paying for it if the installer was actually going to do anything other that open my demarc and close it back up

And that's entirely logical since as a 30Mbps UFB plan costs less than ADSL2+ whereas VDSL2 costs more than ADSL2+ and UFB.

(Except currently ADSL2+ technically does cost less due to the UBA announcement, but this could well end up being backdated)

The installer will install a master filter. That's typically a lot more work than just opening and closing a demarc.

In which case no Chorus monthly fee will be charged by Chorus.

That doesn't change the fact that prices are fixed, just because you don't want Gherkins in your Big Mac doesn't make it cheaper.

If you are planning to leave Orcon, be sure to give them the 30 day notice, otherwise they will ping you the month in advance fees. For us that would be the last time we ever spoke to Orcon -Note they had every right to charge as it was in the fine print.

It assumes that everyone has perfect memory of the fine prints all the time. We were at the point there was no point saving the relationship so we literally begged them to take month in advance to release the order to another provider.

30 days notice is the norm in the ISP world. Those ISPs who don't have such a condition are certainly be in the minority, not the majority.

If you have a splitter already, and plan on using your own VDSL modem, then best is to go for a provider like Bigpipe.
No contract, Unlimited VDSL for $89, with the downside of no splitter install and no free modem. For you though, that isn't really a downside.

It's unlikely that Orcon will budge on their prices, unfortunately.

Try looking at other, more independent ISP's (who are likely to be more accommodating) such as:
