I am mulling over replacing the Fritzbox (served me well) with a Ubiquiti Amplifi now that I am on 2Degrees fibre. Eventually I would get a mesh aerial unit to expand 5Ghz to the downstairs space we are looking to renovate, but would look to get the core unit only to start with.

Does anyone know:

Assume with the latest firmware this works perfectly plugged straight into the ONT and doesn't need additional router in the mix?
Does it support my phone line in the same way as the Fritzbox? Currently I have an RJ11 plugged into the phone port on the Fritz which has enabled my current phones plugged into the existing jacks to work
Is it a suitably secure device from a firewall/internet protection point of view?
Any other comments/tips?

It'll support UFB w/ VLAN 10 no problems however has no ATA to plug your phones into. For this, you'll need something like a Cisco SPA122. 2degrees are happy to give over the settings required.

As for security - they're very secure.

The Fritzboxes have a mode called IP Client Mode. This means that you can plug it into another router and the fritzbox will get an IP via DHCP.

Try that and see if the phone still works that way.

If you set it up this way you'll need to manually configure VOIP settings - it's not receiving TR-069 settings automatically, as it would if it were plugged in to DSL/the ONT. But yep, you could use the Fritzbox as a glorified VOIP gateway.

If you want a phone service then use the supplied hardware in the way that the ISP configures it. Self configuation of the details could break if they change things and push out new settings. Most people that want a fixed phone service seem to "rely" on it, so non standard configs make it so you are at the mercy of nothing changing on the provider side which they would normally take care of.

You can turn wifi on the fritz off and then put your own gear in off the lan port to get better coverage.
