2degrees have finally followed suit, their pay-monthly options are mostly endless-data plans now

Pay Monthly Mobile Plans | 2degrees

Only thing I can't work out is if the data allocation is per user or pooled e.g 12gig each or all connections sharing 12gig.

So really the only challenge is when the throttle applies, 12gb or 40gb. Not bad.

just wish the coverage in welly was better

The pricing looks to be on par with Vodafone now...

Great work 2degrees!

I wonder why they throttle to 1.2mbps after you exceed your plan’s allowance, but 1mnps after you use 40GB of the free hour of data? Seems odd these would be different to me.

Also I wonder if the shaping is more like Vodafone where the data is usable while throttled, or more like Spark where it’s as useful as a chocolate teapot?

Echoing @liquidcore - they do indeed to be dollar for dollar lined up with Vodafone although Spark only has the one group plan for $99 for 100gb

The Spark plan is potentially the worse of all three, where they give the leader 10gb of hotspot data, with excess usage or follower tethering requiring a further $10/month. Both Vodafone and 2 Degrees offer wifi tethering for all connections at no cost.

I think the decision to use one over the other boils down to:
- NZ based support vs Offshore
- 5/4/3/2G vs 3G/4G + wifi calling and coverage.
- whether data clock works for you vs the Vodafone movie ticket discounts.
- roaming pricing now that we will be able to head to Aussie soon.
- Who you have your broadband with (to get the bundle bonus)

Interestingly, it seems you can share data via the app on 2 degrees. I don’t know if this is intended or not.

@cokemaster I am guessing you are still allowed to share your full speed bundle @SaltyNZ

You know what, in this case, I’m not actually sure. I’ve started passing some of the design & build work to a young colleague and this one was his baby so I’m not across all the subtle details. I must be getting old or something.

Recently another colleague who is also an ex-Vodafoner from back in the day was on a conference call with me and Ericsson and said something along the lines of “the last time I worked with Ericsson was about ten years ago on MMS...” Later I gently reminded her that it was closer to twenty.

I expect my Yorkshire accent to kick in any day now.

We’ve had an “endless data” plan since 2018. Including on prepay as well as postpay.

Yes but $40 plan is still not unlimited on 2deg. It's rollover though which may actually work out better for some.

I think the OP meant following suit on offering endless data on cheaper plans, not just the most expensive plan as it was previously.

Correct.

It really comes down now to if you want your bill to come from 2degrees or Vodafone and how much you need Wifi Calling.

One of the losses with these plans is you the ability to share data with other sims, unless they are also on a share plan (@$40 or $46/month). Before you could register a bunch of prepay sims with $0, and share data from one paid account.

Not so good if you have an ipad and want to share your iphones data account.

Still doesn’t beat Kogan unless you use more than 15gb a month. But then you get literally 0 support and 2d mobile support is pretty good.

It’s a step in the right direction.

I bought a refurb iPhone off Kogan once. Will never be dealing with them again. I’d certainly never get my service from them. I’d sooner stab myself in the eye with a fork.

Hmm our experience has been really good in terms of sales and getting our mobile plans up and running. They also run on Vodafone so basically coverage everywhere, VoLTE and 5G.

Again you’re not paying for the support on Kogan but people would be if they went with other carriers. Can believe in the horror stories but hasn’t been the case with us. Again it’s a step in the right direction for 2D and I would have considered it but 12gb for $60 when I can get 15 for $35(27.50 if you prepay for the whole year) know where I’d go and I absolutely haven’t needed to use support just yet.
