Has anyone noticed a difference this afternoon. I heard that TVNZ made some changes around 11am to their configuration.

Generally known online as OpenMedia, now working for Red Hat APAC as a Technology Evangelist and Portfolio Architect. Still playing with MythTV and digital media on the side.

Yeah pretty nasty samples there. Have to be careful though, I think some of the source material is not that great to begin with, I'm specifically referring to the daily show. Even on DVB-T I've noticed that this program looks pretty soft and compressed compared to other shows.

TV2 tonight looked a lot better than last week, but still wasn't as good as it has been looking.

Average for 1h 13m used to be 2.5G, last week was 1.9G and now is 2G for a recording.

Certainly looks like it.
I thought yesterday that around mid day the quality looked significantly better.

Got this in a real letter from TVNZ today:

"The variation in picture quality that you noted in your letter of April 7 is the result of early internal testing by TVNZ relating to the planned introduction of new services.

"This testing will continue for some time while TVNZ determines the optimum set of configuration parameters relevant to its new mix of services.

"However, since you wrote, a number of adjustments have been made and you should have noted a marked improvement. The picture quality on TV ONE and TV2 is being closely monitored and at last report was very good to excellent."

Presumably, the monitoring is done by a perfectly ordinary cross-section of one-eyed TVNZ executives and their advertising customers.

We have submitted a complaint to the Advertising Standards Authority complaining about the Freeview advert claiming 'crystal clear digital quality', which TV1&2 are not.

They have accepted that the complaint falls within their ambit, and said 'the matter [will be] placed before the board'.

Of course, getting the advert removed is hardly the action we are looking for, but to get the ASA to agree that the claim that the picture is 'crystal clear' is false might provide a useful lever.

It does seem, though, that TV1 has got a bit better.

But I've been using the sky transponder for TV1 & 2 while tvnz messes around so i don't know if the picture quality (or lack of) has improved, is the pixelation still occurring?

The VBR in use by freeview makes tracking things on satcodx5 very hard unless you grab a lot of samples

I'll use the current season of the Go Girls as a gauge because

1. I have the all on myPVR
2. The run time is about the same each night

File size early on in the season was around 2.3-2.4G for 1h13mins

At the moment it is 1.8-1.9G

Video quality got really bad for a couple of episodes and then picked up a bit, but still isn't as sharp and clear as the start of the season.

I've also seen problems with some of TV2's shows from Monday night with lots of pixelation etc.

quite normal for this to happen on a digital network.

If your sample periods are really short you might grab while a still image like a caption for a show's address is on screen. That doesn't require a lot of bandwidth.

The VBR range for a typical show can be quite wide.
