C'mon, it's been forever.

Watched the movie "Cars" on TV2 last night and really wanted 5.1 to go with the HD.

Does anyone know how far they are from flicking the switch and giving us all DD5.1 on DTT? Is there a TVNZ spy in the forums who can give us a heads-up?

don't mess with me.... i'm the hd insider....

I was thinking the same thing during the week. Guess TVNZ doesn't want to crawl into the 21st century.

The old NICAM stereo on the analog feed seems way better than the crappy AAC that we get on TVNZ digital..

Ha... was almost going to start a thread like this a few days ago.

Really TVNZ, you've had long enough haven't you?
You guys said all the gear was in place years ago.

To be honest, I don't even know why AAC-HE made it into the Freeview|HD DVB-T spec. It is certainly not deserving of the HD title. Or at least at the bitrates currently being squeezed out at the moment.

Agree on the nicam being better. Guess the improved sound the whale riding sperm thing in the ad talks about is only on tv3 ;)

Lol... I had to youtube that one. I'm pretty sure I had seen it before, but somehow tuned it out.

I'm glad they have moved to a more actual informative ad type, over the 1960's NZ farming couple type stuff.  But once again why make it so visually complicated, like having a whale fly down a street etc?  Who get's paid to come up with this rubbish?

It's like the 3rd or 4th different face of freeview ad's so far.
Remember this plonker?:

I agree.

The freeview ads must be made by a tool.
Would rather they just get to the point saying:

-Analogue shutting down soon.
-You will need either a Satelite dish for freeview SD or a UHF aerial for freeview HD. ( where coverage allows)
-You will also need a satelite or UHF receiver set up box for the tv.
-Some new TVs have freeview terrestrial receivers built in.
-You can get freeview equipment and info from these retailers / sites.......

End.

Would be more effective & informative than doing silly ads that look like they are targeting children.
After all its going to be teens & adults setting it up.

Edit: Also on the samsung tv , theres no dolby digital option anymore, theres only AAC 2.0

Used to be able to get DD & AAC 2.0 when we first got it.  :(

I'm a big fan of those energy spot ads with the cold winter god from the check out my Almighty Johnson TV show. As above, straight to the point and clear, with a human talking to you. They just pick a different topic every few weeks etc.

The Samsungs had a problem providing 5.1 out a while back, looks like they have just skipped that feature altogether. Are all new Samsung TV's doing this? I use the optical out of my Panasonic to provide full 5.1 surround on TV3's shows with no issues.

Im not a fan of how they say it is going digital. Sorry, it went digital a very long time ago. It should be saying "obsolete analog is being switched off"

Bonus if they could use the regionalization to only show it on the analog services so that people who are not watching analog don't have to put up with the patronizing crap too.

The last I heard about the dolby was "We'd fully expect it to be in place before mid-year, preferably much earlier."
That was in January, so I fully expect it to be in place before the end of this month!

Maybe it'll get switched on for the RWC seeing as the last time it was on was for the beijing games.

The Beijing games 5.1 required little or no gear for TVNZ since they just passed the feed along from Beijing. To originate 5.1 requires a complete move to digital in the workflow and resultant cost. Still they have been stringing us along for ages about when they are going to do this and perhaps it will be the RWC that will be the catalyst.

Most likely like they did after the Beijing games if they transmit in DD5.1 for RWC they will revert back to crappy AAC after the RWC..
