As the topic says I want to run a single hosted Application that uses SQL for its database. Sql express would be fine. The cost for a small windows box is about $85-90 a month depending on how much bandwidth you use but the cost for a SQL Server of the same size is $128 - 130ish

If I choose a Windows server am I free to put anything I like on it software wise??

Yes. You can install whatever you want. It's a VM with only Windows OS loaded on it if you selected it from the Quick Gallery. You can install whatever you want on top of it.

Do whatever you want to do man.

Thanks Bill, nice to see you are still keeping your hand in.. (-;

So I guess people choose SQL if they need the licensed versions.

That's correct.

Any reason not use the Windows Azure SQL databases though?

Hi nzkc, just the cost of the same box with SQL is $40 a month more. The App is unlikely to go over the SQL express size limits.

SQL Azure I think he was meaning, not SQL running in a IaaS VM

If the OP is already needing an IaaS VM to host the application then adding SQLExpress probably makes the most sense from a $/month perspective.  If scalability and availability were factors then SQL Azure plus Windows Azure Web Sites would make more sense.
