Hi all

Don't often post. Wondering if anyone else has noticed how Dove is beaten on price recently?

Computer lounge is smashing them at the moment on hard drives, CPUs and M.2. A ryzen 3700 is over 15% cheaper at CL at the moment.

I was going to post prices but that may get me in trouble.

I knew this was an issue for them many years ago, but perhaps I haven't been paying attention.

Customer service is excellent, pricing however speaks for itself. Pisses me off a retail shop selling to noobs is cheaper than a supplier direct to I.T companies.

The suppliers can't tell Dove or PB Tech what price to sell for...

That's illegal.

So all companies involved are free to decide what sort of margin / turnover they are shooting for.

Prices have been rising on most electronics so maybe it’s because Dove have sold through all their stock at the old prices and are now having to sell at higher prices due to those price increases?
That and our dollar has dropped a bit.
Others may still have stock they bought at lower prices.

Opinions are my own and not the views of my employer.

Pricespy prices only mean anything if the shop can supply.

I imagine they're either getting a decent a volume discount, they're sourcing their parts from a different supplier or a combination of both.

CLs biggest competitor would be PBTech who definitely source some of their stock themselves rather than just buying through NZ distributors so they need to be competitive with pricing.

I think you will find some of the items CL stock and sell are actually distributed by Dove. The thing is your buying power with Dove is likely quite a bit lower than CL.

Blame the distributors and their willingness to bend over for volume.

That's why your cant buy it for what Computer Lounge does. Coupled with razor thin margin at the likes of PB.

Nothing new, and not just Dove.

Dove is a wholesaler you are an independent it company. You are buying singles or maybe 10 at a time. PBtech will be buying in the 100's if not 1000's at a time.

Its simple economics the amount of time it takes to pick and ship your 1 product compared to just putting a sticker on a carton and shipping it equals a lot of labor for the wholesaler. These cost saving can be passed on.

There's no blame whatsoever.

No one is 'bending over'.

It's simple economics and if Computer Lounge are ready to get behind a SKU and buy up big, all the power to them! Especially as buying up quantity in their industry tends to be risky with the rapid rate at which pricing and technology changes.

The same most certainly goes for PB Tech... and both companies import some products themselves (PB Tech is obviously the force behind many brands) and CL brings in headphones / amps etc.

I'd 100% agree, it makes things really difficult when pricing up quotes for hardware (unless its Servers etc)
Its been like that for as look as I can remember
Trade prices are often only begger all less than retail , sometimes trade is actually more than retail.

When buying for my own home use , I usually dont even bother getting from trade suppliers , I just go to PB etc.
You can get trade pricing from PB Tech, but the saving is usually very small.

I questioned one of our suppliers/distributors about this, all they could say was some retailers are parallel importing .

The 'distributor' model is a throwback to a time long past . Having a product go through so many hands before it gets to retail is nuts : manufacturer, importer, distributor, retailer
Thats why the parallel Importers thrive.

As one of the OP's "Noobs" buying from retail shops, all I can add is "bring it on".

Well past time a link or two in the ticket-clipping chain was cut out anyway.

It's a bit over complicated... so Dove have their list price - and I can negotiate a better price from them for a volume deal.

In addition as a 'valued' partner of the vendor (Someone with a big turnover) I get a special item rebate on the item that's paid at the end of the month/quarter based on what I purchase from Ingram/Dove/Exeed etc combined.

In addition I likely have a quarterly target that will net me an addition 3-10% if I hit it... and the vendor will provide additional sell through rebates for specific periods.... eg if they want to push a specific SKU or clear stock before a new range....

It does make it hard for 'smaller' operators - but you can always talk to your Dove account manager and see if they can do anything to help you.

In my personal opinion the smaller guy is better off just opening an account with PB - they have a much wider range than a single Disti and you can bet you $100k spend per year is worth a lot more to your local PB branch than it is to Ingram / Dove. Just IMO I'm not affiliated with PB.

Out of interest for others I heard back from Dove.

They passed the buck on to the exchange rate moving dramatically and pressure on supply chain..

Which I think is 60% truth. I also asked if they had better pricing for bigger customers... he mostly avoided the question...

I do have to say, Dove always gives good customer service and their RMA is excellent.

Exeed is also good and I can mostly just beat PBtech..

Well turns out they must have seen this post - dude I was communicating with offered me some pretty pricing on 4TB drives. Asked today for pricing on an NAS upgrade only to get the very cold shoulder from them.

Pretty disappointing turn around, from what has been excellent customer service from dove.
