Hi All!

Moving into a new property where vdsl and adsl are available. Im looking at going with snap as they seem to fit my needs.
Spoke to the sales person and he mentioned the box was 1.5km away, which he thought vdsl might not be feasible due to the distance....

Any thoughts from the experts out there?
Any guesstimate of possible speeds? Up and down.

If you are posting regarding DSL speeds please check that

- you have reset your modem and router

- your PC (or other PCs in your LAN) is not downloading large files when you are testing

- you are not being throttled by your ISP due to going over the monthly cap

- your tests are always done on an ethernet connection to the router - do not use wireless for testing

- you read this topic and follow the instructions there.

Make sure you provide information for other users to help you. If you have not already done it, please EDIT your post and add this now:

- Your ISP and plan

- Type of connection (ADSL, ADSL2, VDSL)

- Your modem DSL stats (do not worry about posting Speedtest, we need sync rate, attenuation and noise margin)

- Your general location (or street)

- If you are rural or urban

- If you know your connection is to an exchange, cabinet or conklin

- If your connection is to a ULL or wholesale service

- If you have done an isolation test as per the link above

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

1.5KM is unlikely to do vdsl, that is well outside of chorus's 'limit'

900m line length is the absolute limit - forget VDSL.

A master filter would probably improve your ADSL.

Try spark... They might give you vdsl. Might. In which case the upload speed is faster by a bit but download not much if at all.

i find it hard to think you could think you could get VDSL and snap thinks you are 1.5km away. must be something going on somewhere

you you put your address into the chorus map? what does it say?
can you give a rough indication on where you live?

Jase : yeah weird...they did say there might be a slight increase in speeds...heres the map screenshot.

Also noticed the fibre install is between july 2016 and june 2017....big time gap...

To add : the estimate for vdsl speeds is 18 down and 7.6up... apparently...

That sounds remarkably fast for 1.5km

If you can get a VDSL install with a master filter, and your VDSL speeds are poor [specifically less than 15Mbps down and 5Mbps up] then you should be able to go back to ADSL without penalty - and you'll have a new master filter as a bonus.

walking distance its ~700m to the cabinet which is located on the corner of Granger road and island view terrace.

so the speed they have told you does fit with the distance.

If it were me i would be trying to minimise the house wiring having any impact on the speed if you were to get VDSL

Sideface, did a measurement on gisviewer and it shows 650m.....free is always good tho. Dunno why the customer service said 1.5km???

Jase....close..650m :) on the chorus map it shows 20+ for +-750m from the box...https://www.chorus.co.nz/what-is-broadband/broadband-technology/what-is-broadband

Hopefully more than 20 and greater upload speeds would be good.
Is there nothing which can boost the signal strength?.... eg.like a wifi booster but for copper...

No.
But a proper VDSL install includes a master filter and a new dedicated line to your VDSL (Ethernet) access point, which will improve your house wiring.

No.

exactly this. basing it off gist is essentially going for absolute best situation.

Tried to up grade to VDSL but was too far away - 1.3km -, Chorus came and did their install, master filter and dedicated jack and our ADSL had a massive speed increase so unless we get rural fibre HA HA am very happy with this.
