Copyright is run by greed. Try and convince me otherwise when I am looking at videos on youtube such as '50 cent stuffing 2 million cash in his lambo' infact name any well known artist who is poor. These copyright cases are not about protecting the small time artist they are bout protecting the profits of big multi-national organisations.

You think the movie industry is suffering? Watching at home will never compare to going to the cinema. Go and search the internet for box-office movie profits and try tell me they are suffering. What? You only made $250 million PROFIT cry-me-a-river.

The internet has developed and times have changed. Copyright laws do nothing but hinder technological development and innovation. It is about time we start thinking of the greater good and the effect we have on society rather than screwing everyone for money like big dirty smelly old school organisation.

Think crowd funding etc. There is a small time artist I cannot get enough of who runs based purely on donations. I willingly donated an amount I thought was fair, there is something beautiful about wanting to pay for something and supporting what you enjoy rather than helping to maximize the profits of WMG etc. Because that is the reality, due to social media artist no longer need the likes of those big corporate organisations to get their name out there sucking away all their profits.

So you know what I say? F##k GOOGLE, F##k HOLLYWOOD, F##K WMG, F##K SOPA, F##K PIPA, F##K all those idiots in government who do not understand the free and open internet and F##K anyone else supporting copyright laws.

THINK YOU ARE POWERLESS YOU ARE WRONG!!! SCREW THESE BIG GREEDY MULTI-NATIONAL ORGANISATIONS WHO AIM TO DESTROY THE INTERNET WITH COPYRIGHT LAWS and ANNOYING INTRUSIVE ADVERTISING #pre-roll adds on youtube

These companies think they are invincible but they would not exist without their users. Users which now through social media are more connected than ever. So hit them where it hurts...

I BRING TO YOU: 'PFG' (PROJECT F##K GOOGLE)
#Change your search engine
#Use OTHER online video sites such as dailymotion and metacafe as-much-as-you-can

Think this is useless? You are wrong. There is a whole community of people like you out there who want to protect the free and open internet. If you cannot be bothered YOU-ARE-TO-BLAME, the power is in your hands!

Excellent rant. Who is the artist you cant get enough of?

Now sit back and watch this turn into the usual boring pro vs con copyright argument.

It is an interesting post, one I agree upon especially when you read posts that the companies that monitor Bit Torrent for copyright infringement do it them selves and the fact that they rather not do anything regarding the 3 Strikes Law in NZ. If I like something I buy it, if I don't like something I don't they don't lose money either way and I can say it is the same for most people, you simply don't buy it if you don't like it.

I'm highly impressed at the quality and quantity of this rant...

One small point ? I would suggest if you were a performing artist or funder of movies, music etc ? That you'd change your tune...

I like how he comes up with "multiple examples" but only lists one and follows with "etc".

Etc comment here.

I am way to frightened to comment.

If I say something that could offend someone then action may be taken against my web sites, my customers and I loose my living.

I'm not smart enough to be anonymous, and I know that. I don't make any attempt to hid who I am, there are way to many smart people out there who can just find out.

Hmm interesting rant.

A couple of things... Why Google?

Don't they promote healthy (awesome) work environments? (I wanna work for the man!)
Don't they support open and free ideas? (code.google, open android, google apps suite, google books, google earth etc)
Don't they support a mass amount of innovation (cant wait for Project Glass!)

Without advertising, how else would you like to pay for the above? I'm sure they would love to have you on their payroll if you could think of a better way?

Second, Copyright law does need a rethink. (BTW Isn't Google leading the charge with getting artists to agree with allowing their books to be put online?) Music, movies, books, etc all need to change their current distribution model.. move with the times, that I agree with you.

Kind of like the following pioneers of a new, slightly improved distribution model?:

Spotify -monthly fee for unlimited music
Netflix - monthly fee for movies/tv shows
Wellington library (had to put that one in there) -online ebooks for loan..(look at the hassles they are going through with unit licencing though)

If you want to help and push out/down the big movie studios, book companies, or music studios, then do one of two things:
1. Don't buy their material
2. use the above services or similar so that the big corporates realise we want a new easier/cheaper way of obtaining copyright material.

Make a civilized stand, not some sh*t a*re DDOS attack! I'd love to pay more in my taxes to put people like you in jail! rrrrrrrr DDOS WTF!

I have a spotify premium account, love it. I regularly go to the movies and rent movies on iTunes. I have a google domain and a YouTube account. I love having my subscribed videos all lined up in YouTube. I pay for a Dropbox account to store my files. I buy all my books on kindle. Capitalism rules, go live in a cave you leech.

spotify premium is great. if Netflix was 'legit' here i'd subscribe to that too - instead I have a fatso account which gives me similar benefits, but with the hassle of postal

Yes, it is cool. Vodo.net operates on the same basis for movies and distributes using torrent protocol. Early days still, but it provides a career entry point and alternative distribution for original movie makers. Even so the content is copyright. Unless specifically noted otherwise the music generated by your favorite artist is copyright as well. Interested to hear them.

Good reminder about dailymotion and metacafe. I have hardly ever visited directly. You seem to be objecting to youtube advertising method rather than internet advertising in general.

I'm sure DDOSing youtube is all good fun and a pleasant social activity but how about using the bandwidth to promote good music and video whose creators actually promote torrenting? That could be a lot of fun as well.

After giving this a bit of consideration, I wonder if this thread is really just a presentation by someone who is VERY pro-copyright and wanting to tip swing voters with a moral compass towards the Copyright camp by making them question the legitimacy of the anti-copyright lobby?

I will agree that the content industry needs to rise up and do some serious education about why their product costs money to make.  They are very poor at this.  They fail to explain their case to the point where militants just rise up and attack their business, causing harm to all those in their path.

I do agree though... at present, content providers live in fear to even attempt to put their content on line.  With army's of 9,000 people ready to take them off line, it's impossible to build a business case to even attempt to put content online for a fee... what sane banker would sign off on that?

Which brings me back to questioning the original poster and wondering if this is just the pro-copyright lobby driving FUD.

I can guarantee you I am not pro-copyright. My motive behind those comments at the end is I believe we must stand up and fight rather than just accepting what is happening in the way of copyright laws because they have potential to ruin the internet.

I am always open to opposing opinions and willing to listen to arguments supporting copyright as I believe doing so is good for a healthy debate.

I do not have much time at the minute but will update with some more comments next week.

#Some interesting points from a response elsewhere on the internet:
'I would first like to point out that Google is strongly anti-copyright. They are required by law to adhere to copyright laws, but they've poured a lot of money and effort into fighting for copyright reform, so I don't quite understand your "Project F*** Google" campaign. Google is actually one of the biggest allies of copyright minimalists. Which is why the MPAA/Hollywood, the RIAA, and other media industry gatekeepers are so ticked off at them.'

Do you believe Google is anti-copyright? (to avoid confusion 'PFG' is aimed at intrusive and annoying advertising which ruins the viewing experience).

'Start by voting against politicians that don't support a free and open internet. The fewer of these jokers we have in Congress and other offices, the better.

Then, spread the word about crap laws that threaten the internet. That's what stopped SOPA and PIPA... not DDoS attacks. It was people getting informed about the issue and then contacting their lawmakers en masse to demand that they do something to stop it.'

The Internet? Are you worried about the Internet?

Did you know that copyright is used to block sales of generic medicines that could bring health to millions of people? Or used to block the use of seeds that could bring food to millions of people?

Reality is, the Internet is nothing compared to the lives of millions that have no access to the basic stuff - water, food and health.

I use the Internet because I'm privileged. You use the Internet because you're privileged. I don't like some of the copyright uses, but in the big scheme this is nothing compared to what really needs fixing.
