I just ordered the Pixel 6 128GB from Kogan for $1116 delivered for my mother.

I also asked my VF account manager to supply a Pixel device and they have confirmed they cannot.

I have also escalated the following through my VF account manager:

Can you please escalate to the engineering team the following question for more clarity:

  • The Google Pixel 6 Pro is compatible with VFNZ 4G and 5G networks however can you please confirm VF will provision the Pixel 6 to allow 5G and VoLTE profiles, noting that network quality cannot be guaranteed
  • Or what is the process/cost to get this device certified?

Will see what happens.

They are back on Mightyape in every colour in 128GB and 256GB storage options, in both non-Pro and Pro.

Still horrific pricing but I have pre-ordered a 256GB Pro in Black - I very much intend to demand a retrospective price match once Dick Smith lists the 256GB

Looks like DS price on the 6 has been bumped from 1099 to 1199. Oof!

Man the price gouging going on is apalling. The same phone is $999 AUD on Kogan.com: https://www.kogan.com/au/buy/google-pixel-6-128gb-stormy-black-aunz-model-google/

It's a hard road being a Pixel fanboi in NZ that's for sure. From a development point of view it's a reference device and I wish telcos were more aware of it for that reason only. Happy nerds are influential net promoters.

Could even buy them directly from Google. Frustrating how we've gone so far backwards, despite the Pixel being allegedly more "mainstream" :(

Isn't there quite a few staff members of the NZ carriers on this very forum? Is there any explanation or comment from any as to why Pixels are completely ignored year after year? All I ever hear is they're looking into it and then nothing happens. As you say it has developer implications as well as generally just an audience of influential nerds among friends\family. 2degrees used to get behind the Nexus phones and was the entire reason I was a customer of theirs at the time.

As others mentioned, its lack of support from Google not the retailers.

I imagine the answer is still the same

To be clear, I would love to launch Pixel, especially right now, and I'm certainly not the only one.

There's a perfect storm of factors making that a no-go:

  • These are premium products, and do not offer a premium user experience in this market to match those price tags
  • Google have locked down 5G and VoLTE in software, this is not on NZ telcos at all - Spark and Voda allow open access to both technologies, BYO compatible device and away you go
  • Historically, Pixels have had a high failure rate, and no authorised service agent locally - real local warranties cost pretty significant money to provide, which makes the products even more expensive to bring to retail
  • The cost to enter a new market, particularly one where operator and supply chain partnerships are not yet in place, is spendy and a lengthy process
  • There is a global shortage of semiconductors + tremendous disruption to global (and domestic) logistics right now, smartphones are in dire constraint across the board - and across brands

My understanding is that Google have historically viewed Pixel as a branding showcase for their software and AI rather than a serious smartphone play. Pixel 6 and Pro are stunning, wonderful design, great features, they would do well here, and may be the first step to changing that view. Unfortunately it's not going to happen in NZ until Google wants to do it.

I heard from someone that Google is setting up to open their business here officially in NZ due to Adwords and once they can do it they can sell devices like phones etc to ensure CGA is given to consumers.
