I cant get the repair to work - tried about 5 times and none have worked.

If you can find the zip file for version 5.1.11.0G, try running that again. I did, the system thought it was an upgrade, did it's thing. Then I installed the Google gubbins from the Hot Apps app (there was no repair option), and this in turn caused all my apps to update. Annoying process to simply get the latest version of Netflix...

After that, version 5.1.11.1G installed without any update to Google.

OK so after reading a bunch of threads it appears the 5.1.11.0 and 5.1.11.1 was released with a known issue whereby the GMS would not fix maps or play. Quite a bit of backlash out there which is bad for Meizu.

I did however find a fix and now my phone has both play and Maps ... Yay

To Fix

Create a forum account (you need one to get the download play store link to work)

Download the google play zip file - if downloading the zip file to your PC first you need to copy the zip file to the phone and extract the zip to an APK file on your phone first before installing.

Install play store via the APK and you should be good.

I then installed maps from the play store.

I wont be trying any new releases again - to much headache.

If the above doesnt work then install the Google play services first before installing google play. this is what i did but when installing google play services it said I was on the same version already and I would overwrite/re-install. i.e. so shouldnt be necessary to install Google play services but up to you.

So they have fixed it, going by the flyme forums, it introduced bloatware and deleted all play store apps, playstore and google maps, pretty much anything google.

Its unlikely the M3 will ever get and 6.0? Its been out for ages, so I dont see what the hold up is?

Flyme 6 is in beta testing now. Whether that is based on Marshmallow or Nougat is anyones guess.

Never had any issue with Playstore on my M3S in the 2 months I've had it.

New update for M3 Note - 5.1.12.0G

This'll be the last Flyme 5 update before Flyme 6 hits. Same procedure as usual to upgrade - download the file to the phone (Or to PC and transfer to phone over USB), open the stock Files app, find the update.zip and tap it to upgrade.

Testing the Chinese build of Flyme 6 on my M3 Max, expecting a global beta of Flyme 6 for M3 Note to land when I'm back at work next week. It's really nice so far, with a more muted colour palette, new fonts, plus significantly upgraded visuals, icons, and animations. Better translations and lots of rough edges ironed out.

My inability to receive MMS messages continued:

I have just returned from a trip to Europe and South Africa. A trip full of highs and lows.

Wanting my NZ clients to be in a position to contact me, but at the same time curb my roaming charges, I elected to explore the Dual-SIM feature of the phone. Instead of purchasing a 'Euro' SIM at the airport in Rome (for marital related issues), I purchased a Lycamobile card from an outlet in the city the following morning. This was on the premise that the plan would give me "roaming in 18 countries" that included all the countries I intended to visit. The key thing was the 2Gb data, I didn't really care for the call & TXT count. For some reason the 'tech' moved my 2Degress SIM to position 2 and placed the Lyca SIM into position 1.

I only noticed this when I found that the calls and TXTs weren't working and that the Lyca SIM was only connecting to 2G. I then swapped the SIM positions around and voila I had a 4G connection on the Lyca SIM. The 2Degrees SIM now only showed 2G. None of this really mattered though as I couldn't make any calls, TXTs or browse the web on the Lyca SIM. All I could get it to do was run USSD codes. No one in Italy, Germany or Spain could get the Lyca card to function correctly in the M3 Note. By the time I got to London my wife "don't you dare" when we walked past a Lycamobile agent.

All I can say is 'thank heavens' for all the free WiFi that is abound across Europe.

Get to South Africa and visit the Vodacom (Vodafone) store at the airport to collect my pre-ordered SIM (https://b4i.travel/). Install SIM into position 1 in the SIM tray and hey presto only 2G. WTF!!! Install SIM into position 2, 4G immediately. Very happy. Curiously though still no reception of MMS messages. The attached image is with Vodacom. I tried with my Sister-in-law's MTN-SA card and her husbands TelkomSA cards, both with the same result.

While waiting in Sydney for my connection last night, I reinstalled my MicroSD card and 2Degrees SIM. My connection is shown in the second image. I can receive TXTs, but cannot send them. Haven't bothered with MMS. Whatsapp works, but as can be imagined, it's very slow.

I'm in the process of backing up my phone before factory resetting it and loading the latest non-beta firmware. Let's see what happens.

P.S. The phone attracted a lot of attention as a handset. Everyone wanted to know about the brand, were impressed with the clarity of the screen and other specs. I only let on about the poor camera, not my other niggles.

The "Preferred SIM for Mobile Data" options under Settings/Sims and networks determines which SIM/SIM slot will be 3G/4G and which will be 2G-only. Can toggle this as required.

MMS issues when regularly switching SIMs are likely to be either incorrect APN settings or routing issues between international networks (These crop up quite frequently). MMS isn't going to be a good time when travelling as there's not much guarantee that the network you're on at the time can receive the message correctly from the originating network.

In any case I would use Facebook Messenger or WhatsApp instead of MMS. Mobile data is paid for while MMS can cost up to $1 or more each...
