Also, did you know that when you post a link, if you select the 2nd option in the drop down list for the "window" to open, it will open the link in a NEW window i.e the Geekzone tab remains and isn't replaced by the link you've provided. Much nicer not to be kicked out of Geekzone when you're viewing another link :-) There's my Christmas wish, I don't ask for much

Oh and the download file is from the thread that I can not find on Whirlpool. It's called Easy_Updater_(3BF)_for_Samsung_Galaxy_S_I9000.rar. Apparently it's a modified version of Richthofen's 3 button combo fix.

You can use this - XDA Kies Registry Patcher

It changes region code in kies to a region where 2.2 update is available for your phone. Then you can goto 2.2, then apply chainfire. After that use root explorer or terminal (free, but more complicated) to backup your efs directory. I never needed to use kies registry patcher because my phone was parallel imported (I think it was from germany).

Be aware that doing this can still result in a bricked phone if you do not have the three button recovery working.

Hence, it IS a fault despite what Samsung NZ might try to claim. The people at samsung claiming this should be fired.

yup i agree. any sort of updating / flashing can go wrong. If you want to be 100% warranty covered you can't do any fw/kernal/lagfix/root mods, it's just the way it is. In the kies registry patcher thread the author states you should have 3 button download mode, not 3 button recovery mode, but perhaps he meant to say 3 button recovery.

Yes, I was trying that second time around, after the failed msg came through. I then downloaded that Richtofen's file and attached it to PDA, but as I've mentioned before, it came back as failed. I just think I should have started again, by unplugging my phone etc. But I was just scared to touch it, because it was stuck in download mode.

I would be the same. I'd want some reason to believe it was the right thing to do, or atleast I had exhausted the options.

What I will do, is that I will follow Richthofen's instruction when I'm doing this second time. I need to go out for a little while, but will try it this arvo. Will keep you updated. Thanks for the advice bud. :>

Yes, this is best done when rested and when the house is quiet. You don't want distractions helping you forget some piece of info.

Edit, Clockwork mod is something that allows me to back up my current fw, right?

Yes, it claims to do that... e.g. I did that, it seemed to work, but I have not verified it by restoring it.

Mmmmm, I think he's retracted it. The Whirlpool link I provided I think is the one you're also talking about. This from Dean-O on the last page of the thread:

Unbelievably, there are still phones being purchased without three button download/recovery combinations. To date I have still had no reports of bricked phones from using the update included with my Easy Updater program. However, I have had one instance where it didn't work (the phone continued to work as before, but still no three button combinations). I subsequently solved the issue using an updated procedure.

For fear that it might not work for others, or worse still, it might result in a bricking, I would like to recommend that people cease using Easy Updater (3BF), unless you are reapplying it to your phone, having applied it successfully in the past and then lost it from flashing. In the near future I will put together a package that has all the tools and instructions you need based on this fix (0 brick reports internationally). If, in the meantime, you decide to follow the instructions on that site and find that your unlucky enough to have an 'x0' phone, note that as an alternative to the experimental fix there is Richtofen's Odin-based fix. The fix itself is safe, but personally I prefer not to use Odin, especially for bootloader stuff, as if it fails during the transfer of the bootloader your phone may be bricked. Having said that, newer versions of Odin are notably more stable, or you could consider using Heimdall.

Currently on Darkyy 5.2, but had a couple of versions of Doc's ROMs before that...

Hmmm, might have to go over to the "Darkyy" side since Doc is likely to be backing off from creating ROMs for the SGS, he's ordered a Nexus.

Like all software, you want to know the support and upgrades are continuing. No point falling in love with something and then finding it out of date (if you're Hugh you have a solution for that).

What I don't like about Darkyy is his annoyance on the Doc thread. Seems like he's stirring the pot unnecessarily. Makes me feel disloyal to jump camps but then Doc doesn't know me from a bar of soap. I'm sure I'll not be missed ;-)

Ahhh, I meant to post this morning. With Wifi set to off when the screen is asleep (or whatever it's called) my phone lost 34% overnight. That's pi$$ poor in my opinion. I'll def. be going to a custom rom. I pledge my allegiance to .... [watch this space]

One of them is 18 years old and the other 47. I think that probably explains some of the errr... gesturing.
The impetuousness of youth probably also explains why we saw v5.3, then v5.4 in quick succession today. I'd prefer to see him pull it back a little in both his bravado and release frequency, but there is probably a lot of peer pressure playing into it sadly. The mob are demanding.

I sound old and ungrateful.

Gosh, I'm impressed you know their ages.
I saw what happened right at the beginning with Darkyy apparently flogging Docs rom as his own which I thought (if true - appears to be) a bit on the nose.

Does Darkyy have people beta testing like Doc does? Being employed by a software company I value beta programmes and like to believe what ends up released is as good as it can be (with the included functionality). I'm such an idealist ;-)
