Looking to switch from iPhone to Android (oneplus 3T). I need to be able to sync up the Google Calendar on the phone to my desktop Outlook 2016 calendar.
I think there are a few third party software options - can anyone recommend the best way to do this?

Could you go the other way around? Have your Google Calendar appear in your Outlook and then update the calendar in Outlook its updated in Google straight away?

If you're using Outlook to access to Office 365 then you have some other options. Are you doing that?

I use an xtra email address which I access on my desktop via Outlook 2016. When I accept a calendar invitation it goes into my default data file in Outlook. Currently I sync my iPhone calendar with my desktop Outlook calendar via iTunes which is very easy.
Am hoping to be able to stick with current email setup rather than have to migrate to Gmail as one alternative. I have thought about migrating to Outlook.com which can sync with Google, but all sounds too hard!

Either Outlook.com or Office 365 will do this very well.

Check this out too: http://www.akruto.com/ It might do exactly what you want.

I've been using Akruto for a couple of years now, with mixed feelings. Yes, it does sync automatically across all devices. For me that is for Outlook calendar, contacts, tasks and notes from my desktop PC to my Android phone and tablet. The Akruto service desk is excellent too - and TBH I've had to contact them quite a bit for several problems. Worth noting too that you should fix your IP address, otherwise you have to re-set all settings on all devices each time the IP address changes.

Re setting up a static IP address - FYI I just checked with Spark and because I'm on a residential plan, they would charge me $15 per month for a static IP address!

I wasn't sure whether Spark charged for a static IP address but I guess that's why I stuck with a changing one. It's only a minor irritant to change the Akruto settings whenever your IP address changes - you get used to it and it only takes a few minutes. As you may know IP addresses seem to change very irregularly: sometimes lasting only a week and other times for some months.

(slightly offtopic - be sure you don't need LTE Band 28 [700Mhz] if you're to get a 3T - it doesn't support it)

Actually I found a thing called the internet that I could look this up on I see Spark 700 4G network is mainly in the rural areas. Will need to find out more as I don't want a phone that doesn't work well outside urban areas.

I wouldn't by any phone now the doesn't support band 28 if you care about 4G. 700 is in the city's too.

Syncing desktop emails, calendars is a PITA with android. I've tried several including Akruto. which is good if a bit nerdy to set-up, but I had to abandon it. I also use TomTom as a nav aid on the phone and this fails to pick up the contacts populated by Akruto. This is probably a TomTom problem rather than Akruto, dunno. (TomTom does not provide a list of contact databases to chose from.)

I've gone back to DejaOffice/Companion link which has a manual rather than autosync. It's OK, nothing special, but does work with TomTom.

Outlook.com is only OKish if you are using cloud email, but not if you are using desktop only system. But IMHO Outlook.com overall is pretty useless as you cannot edit or add contact or calendar items on the phone & the sooner MS fix that the better. This has to be done on the cloud or the desktop version.

People in other posts have recommended Nine, but I've no experience of it.

If you want band 28 (I wouldn't buy one without it) consider Huawei, although there are plenty of others. The old P9 is available at good prices or the new P10 is becoming available with the P10 Plus 64 GB on special at Warehouse Stationary at the moment - if you like gaudy gold. [Edit:] Also available in black. Price $960. [Edit 2. Price Spy had it as 128 GB, shop says 64 GB]

I use Outlook Google Calendar Sync for people normally. Its free, its reliable as long as you keep it updated. Rarely ever misses a beat. Works better than quite a few of the paid ones Ive used in the past.

You can add / edit contacts & calendar entries on the phone no problem with Outlook.com, so sounds like a setup or phone issue if you can't.

I'm not aware of any way of doing this, the web is full of complaints. To quote from my Outlook.com phone help: "How do I sync my Outlook contacts to my address book? .... Currently, contact push provides 1-way sync from your email account to the phone. Newly added contacts and changes made in your email service (e.g. Outlook.com ....) will sync to your mobile device. Edits made on the mobile device will not sync back to your email service. .......... We plan to improve Outlook's contact capabilities over the coming months.

That help advice has been there for months so I'm not holding my breath on 2-way sync.

I've the same issue on 3 different devices/accounts so if you can provide links to help otherwise that would be great.
