I have some HTML files in the internal storage of my android phone.

I can open them (and they load the associated CSS file in the same folder) using Chrome.

So far so good.

But what I need to do is create a shortcut on the home screen, and it seems only the Android Browser has the power to do that.

When I enter file:///sdcard/download/index.html in the bar it just does an google search.

Why would it work in chrome and not in Android Browser?

Grrrrr!

There are a few ways to create a shortcut to files in Android. Some options here that may work. https://www.google.co.nz/search?q=android+create+shortcut+html+file

To add, I use Solid Explorer and you just push and hold the file you want to create the shortcut for, hit the 3 dots and select 'create shortcut' and you're done.

Thanks for the suggestion, but it doesn't seem to treat it as a normal shortcut.

I open the shortcut with Android Browser and it says Your File was Not Found, and in the address bar there is "content://0@media/external/file/524".

Chrome will open the HTML file, but not render the CSS content, the links on the page don't work, and has the same thing in the address bar.

It seems that shortcuts created by the file manager aren't a shortcut in the normal sense, but it's actually some kind of facsimile of the file itself.

Oh and btw I found that the native Samsung file manager will create shortcuts too, but they behave in exactly the same way.

That stuff will be a result of the changes that they made to stop apps from having file access to the sdcard. I had the same links come up in some media player app which meant it could play the track I opened, but wouldnt be able to move on to the next one in the folder as only the opened file made it thru the stuff in the way.

How about creating a shortcut to the folder containing the html file? Adds an extra step, but should be a workaround.
