I am trying to get all the details together so I can root the HTC Desire. I note that most of the instructions seem to refer to HBoot  of 0.80 or below. I have tried to read the version on my Desire and although it is very hard to read I think it says 0.83 (I know I need glasses but no one else around here can read it accurately either)
Does this sound correct. Can anyone confirm that there is a version 0.83 and if so how do I go about rooting it if all the information I can find seems to say only phones with HBoot less then .80
Thanks

What's your information source? modaco.com is probably the best.

Set usb to debugging mode, and make sure the connection type is set to disk drive.

http://unrevoked.com/recovery/

then download that and execute as a super user.

It will give you simple instructions from then on. Easy as pie :)

Well I took battery out and it started up as per normal. Phew tense moment there S I guess I proceed with second part of Unrevoked process of copying a rom onto phone. Any suggestions as to what rom to use?

That happened to me when I rooted with unrevoked, too. Sorry I forgot when you needed an answer.

As to ROMs, I've been using the Modaco 3.1 (android 2.1) for a while with no complaints, and just put their android 2.2 one on tonight. It is certainly snappier, although it's still early days. Look for the r8 thread on the modaco desire forum, if you want to give that a try: http://android.modaco.com/content/htc-desire-desire-modaco-com/316565/24-aug-r8-modaco-custom-rom-for-htc-desire-with-online-kitchen-2-2-froyo/

You may also want to get the ROM Manager app: it makes backing your software up and installing ROMs much easier.

More problems. I can boot the phone into When I reboot to boot screen and highlight recovery and press power the HTC screen comes up for a second and then all goes black. Only way I can get phone back is to pull battery. Have tried this several times it just will not go into recovery mode
Any thoughts please?

Can you select recovery by pressing the trackpad instead of the power button?

Download the clockwork recovery, rename it to update.zip, put it on your SD card, and then boot into recovery.
