So if you take the information provided by the web link this is potentially a major change for customers.  What the flyer doesn't say is, is it all happening at once, or will it be phased in over a period of time (VTV first, followed by landlines, followed by HFC upgrade) or all at once in one hit (ha ha I hear you laughing).  Many people will have security systems that rely on the landline that will need to be migrated or the systems will need to be upgraded/replaced.  I'm interested in the data speeds that will be offered on the upgraded HFC link as they may well incent me to remain with Voda after the T-Box has gone otherwise there is little or no incentive to stay given the number of companies offering fibre.

But you do realise that within 12 months you'll struggle to even have a landline with Spark over the Chorus network as well? The first NEAX shutdowns on Friday in Miramar and Devonport are going to be followed by a lot over the first six months or so of 2021. While there is no actual date yet we've known that somewhere around 2022 was a shutoff date for the past 10 years!

 

If you have an alarm on an analogue line still and the monitoring company hasn't proactively migrated yet it's time to find a better monitoring company.

One of our customers just got a Dear John from Spark last week, CPC3 is 31 March 2021 interestingly they only mentioned ISDN and not their fax line getting cut

I think good migration has been going on for some time - many people in Kapiti were migrated off ex TCL POTS/billing around a year ago.

It didn't go well - they didn't highlight to people that their account number changed, so my grandparents had their services cut off as their payments had the wrong account and account number.

Sounds like they have left TBox customers til last

One of our other customers who uses Spark for voice that had PRI is on BBIP for fax and SIP trunks - Spark seem to be picking and choosing who will migrate Analogue lines to BBIP

Well, that start of this topic - on the 24th of May 2020 - was that HFC had disappeared from the offer list, when using the broadband new sale picker, with only fibre or dsl being offered. This triggered a round of people questioning whether Vodafone had abandoned Cable and its customers (again).

 

A few days ago, in a different forum topic, mention was made that t-box was being withdrawn because the focus was to consolidate onto docsis3.1 minimum, meaning the set-top box and support surfboard modem were no longer supportable. At some point these will be disabled, although it's in vodafones interest to migrate customers and retain them and their monthly subs. We also know that voice (classic POTS) services were being withdrawn in favour of VOIP from the vodafone modem - remember, TelstraSaturnClear built an overlay of the phone network wherever cable went, to take people off telecom completely.

 

Fiddling with the address checker today, it appears cable is back on the menu. I had a facebook ad come up offering $20/month off for a 12 month commitment.

 

I'm guessing one urgent business case was written, and the same ground was gone over but with less constraints than the upgrade to docsis3.1 - namely, if you turn cable off you still have to take the network down (based on pole right agreements), which I imagine would be well in excess of $25m now. You have a working box for voice, there doesnt appear to be any service options for reticulating analogue voice back into the house wiring (which Chorus can do at extra cost), and the Vodafone TV Sagem box appears to be a pretty good alternative for t-box, but with some real limits on the service. I still have content I recorded in 2010 on my t-boxes, no such options with v-box!

 

Anyway, the prices (no vodafone mobile on account):

 

1. HFC - 1gig/100mg upload - $73/month - and a vodafone ultrahub for $15 shipping.

 

2. Fibre100/20 - $69/month - BYO modem or Ultrahub for $4/month extra. No term.

 

This plan can be changed to 1gig/500mbps for an extra $40/month.

 

The third option is literally a rehash of option 2, but adding the cost of the modem into the calculation. So it becomes $73/month, or $113/month with 1000/500 profile

 

This price includes the $20/month off for 12 months. So a full gig fibre plan, based on my simple maths, would be $133/month. If you have a voda mobile on account, you can get $10/month off.

 

 

 

I don't know what the impact of not being in a cable area does to the offer maker, so would be interesting for someone outside welly/kapiti/chch to give it a go and see what happens.

Got me wondering, with DVB-C being withdrawn then what will become of the Cable TV headend in Seaview? (Lower Hutt)

 

I do hope with this migration that all the niggles with the new Vodafone TV service get sorted, as well as getting the channels that Sky have in HD on Satellite upgraded.

Interesting detail. It's actually a full migration off legacy POT's to VOIP from RGW, and t-box to v-box. And from TCL's legacy billing platform to Vodafone's billing system. and from the old configured bundle packages to the new ones.

 

Necessary, but will cause some conversation no doubt as historical discounts are removed.

 

 

It says that the pricing will be similar to the current pricing or less. Sales agents will call to discuss.

 

If that follows the experiences of my neighbour when dealing with the offshore call center they will not listen, or at best understand, and try their best to upsell. He's the one that had fibre installed as part of the future proofing by Chorus. He didn't request it. It will be interesting to see if they try to push him over to that.

It is going to be an interesting discussion as I am on a pretty competitive legacy price for TV, landline and data.

 

VTV is inferior to T Box for the way our household use it ( I have an Mi Box for Netflix etc) it so I will have to decide whether to stay with Vodafone.

 

The landline is not critical but I am getting it for an extremely competitive price.

 

Luckily Chorus installed fibre a few weeks ago as part of their cold call campaign  so it will be easy to get an ISP if needed but getting the TV channels is pretty important.

Whether or not to stay with Voda is an interesting question, I have a Gen 2 VTV box and have played with it but not seriously as we have a T-Box.  I'm not wedded to the landline, and if the speed/cost of the new HFCMax link is competitive I may stay with Voda.  The biggest issue with the VTV box is the lack of HD streams, no ability to record every channel and the fact that you can't keep a recording for longer than 3 months (that and the stream of complaints from people who use one as their primary TV connection).  My smart TV has YouTube, Netflix, Neon, Prime and I have a Chromecast so I don't really need those features from VTV.

We were talking about your plan the other day, it is irreplaceable you will be paying at least $50 more for what your getting if you move anywhere else 

 

I would be using your position to drive a hard bargain with Vodafone.....

Fibre is definitely more future proofed, but here is your dilemma the new Vodafone TV with your Sky Channels you current have on your TBox is $51.49 p/m - Then add the cheapest fiber broadband plan 100/20 for $69 p/m (assuming you will still use your current router)

 

Now compare those two figures added together to the figure you DM'd me the other day - Seriously you need to have a hard chat with VF

 

And yes HFC is cheaper for them they don't have to pay Chorus as they own the network

well I'm sussing out our house move in a couple weeks, and we're currently on the HFC network.

 

I spoke with Vodafone today (very quick to answer, and got a kiwi, I guess I'm lucky) ... the new house has fibre already installed but no HFC cable running to the house, which means a technician would have to come out if we want to stay on HFC.

Turns out for the exact same price as I'm currently paying now for 100/10 on HFC, I can get Fibre Max (900/400ish). I could have gone with Ultra HFC for a bit cheaper than Fibre Max, but after reading this thread, and the need to have a technician to come and install the HFC cable (which is underground at my new place), going to fibre was a no brainer really.

 

They weren't pushing HFC on me at all, in fact the guy seemed to only bring it up after I asked about my old school Cisco modem, he had already assumed I would be going with fibre

 

I do wish I had been reviewing my plan and pricing on a more regular basis, it's a bit annoying that it turns out I could've had Ultra HFC at my current place for cheaper than what I've been paying for 100/10, but oh well hindsight huh, I just need to learn the lesson from this experience and do a review on a yearly basis at least.
