GSM growth in Americas: 54%

Based on recent subscriber data reported by EMC, GSM has 8.5 million subscribers in Latin America, a 90% growth rate in just one year, and 17.6 million subscribers in the United States and Canada, a 41% growth rate in 2002.

MmO2, the mobile phone firm spun off from British Telecom, has announced its withdrawal from the Netherlands, with the sale of its Dutch unit for £17 million. British Telecom purchased 50% of the company in July 2000 for £1.2 billion.

Slow uptake of 3G in UK forces 3 to move and reduce handset prices. Perhaps the public is really not interested in paying more for the "opportunity" to see a soccer match on the little tiny screen. Or not very interested in writing e-mails using a phone keypad. Something that I still don't understand, is why operators think that mobile services have to be provided with such limited interfaces. May be we need a phone with touch screen, but not the size of the Pocket PC Phone Edition?
