Evening all, have a bit of a query:

Been given a 500 GB SATA drive that was part of a RAID setup, however I want to use it as a normal drive, storage only in a media storage PC. Can this be done, do I need to change anything to make it visible in BIOS on start up?

Cant get it seen anywhere in PC.

Hi there,
No you can plug it in and it will just work. I do however suggest you delete the partitions currently on there and setup your own.

Aaronp can you clarify that you have tried installing it and it isn't visible in BIOS?

Without knowing the rest of your setup, I can recommend a few things to check:

Assuming this is a SATA disk, check connection cables inside case to motherboard and power supply are properly connected. You may have different coloured sata ports on your motherboard. If you have connected the drive to one of these ports, you will need to check that both the onboard controller and the Southbridge controller are enabled in the bios. Refer motherboard manual.

If you are not using RAID, ensure RAID is not enabled in the bios, and try to use SATA as IDE mode. This means all your disks should be found in the BIOS.

Post your BIOS settings if you want.

If it is still not there, go to website of disk manufacturer and obtain utilities files to install drivers for the HDD. Recommend a BIOS version upgrade as well.

As for previous partitions, you can remove these when installing the operating system, or after you boot using the disk management section of computer management (Windows).
