Saw this on Stuff comments on a Sky article today. My bolding

Im a bit of a sport fanatic and never had sky for a few years since the 2011 world cup but last week they rang me up and offered sky starter and sky sport with mysky for 39 dollars a month on a 6 month contract

Thanks. Do you know if its nationwide, basically is it just 1 guy that does the installations? I'm based in wgtn.

Probably just the one guy in the tele sales. Installation is done by the Sky installers (contractors to Sky TV), so is available nationwide.

Its gone up, for some

Used to be Basic and Sport or movies + HD = $49

Now if you want the better basic, Entertainment its $49 even though HD will be free

i.e. was $39 + HD now its $49 with free HD

Definitely. They had two options, adapt or do nothing and milk it even more.

Broadband was the changer here, as now customers had a viable alternative delivery medium to live broadcast.

They dabbled with streaming options, both with bundled sky go and the standalone fanpass, but ultimately felt fanpass cut into their core subscriber cash cow.

They then priced fanpass out of the water and declared they had tried it and the NZ public didn't want it.

Now they're shedding customers faster than a malting yeti suffering from climate change, and still acting like it's a surprise.

Interesting to look across the ditch at Kayo Sports (2 screens A$25, 3 screens A$35). They already have 100,000 paying customers (and I imagine that will increase massively with AFL and NRL starting this month), and offer more than what satellite/cable customers and Foxtel Now customers do. If Fan Pass offered all the Sky Sport channels (including popups and ESPN) and on demand replays, I would probably happily fork out the $55/month for the service.

I just cancelled Sky (as we had been subscribing for my father-in-law who was in a rest home, but passed away this week), and had to chuckle when the disconnection team asked if there was anyone else who wanted to take over the contract. We had been enjoying watching the cricket via SkyGo (decoder up at the rest home), but then for some reason a few weeks ago SkyGo wouldn't work in Chrome. We've had to do the whole "enable Flash" dance when it came up with the "browser incompatibility" error (every. damn. time), but this time it didn't work. Didn't work in Edge either. In the end, I was happy to cut Sky loose, as it was just such a farcical system using outdated technology and stupid restrictions. I really don't want another box in our living room, so having to have a decoder is a dealbreaker for me, and why Sky Go was fine (when it worked). But they really need to get with the times, ditch Flash, and allow Chromecast or some other streaming option by default, rather than being an after thought as a way to watch.

Fingers crossed that Sky come up with something for the 21st century by the time the cricket season rolls around again. You'll forgive me if I don't hold my breath...

I might give the text a go; I'm looking at $80 and I can't justify it for Supercars & bad Blues rugby and I accidentally wiped my Simpsons episodes off the Sky box so I'm not so emotionally attached to it anymore.

The only prob with Kayo sports is you need a VPN to run it, iv had to go through 3 vpns after a few days because somehow they keep geo blocking it for me which is becoming frustrating.

Yeah Kayo do stipulate that they don't support VPN's and that you must be in Australia to consume the content...was hoping this was a good option but argh nope

Me (and many others) can report that Kayo does work with a VPN. I use PIA. YMMV.
