Cadbury went from being a favourite to not very quickly. Dont tell me that it was the "environmental" aspect of what they did that got people to vote with their wallets. That would be like missing the point that green issues were less important, as surveyed, for people in 2009 than 2008 (it was fine until the economy meant that there were suddenly higher priorities than overpaying for organics).
Cadbury got it wrong because they changed the recipe - flavour was very different and it had an awful mouth feel (oil over butter).

But with chocolate you had a choice of other brands. Not so with pay TV in NZ..

Well we live many miles from town on a rural block that keeps us extremely busy as well as running a business and bringing up a young family. Don't eat out, go to the movies, smoke, or drink a lot etc. So Sky is our entertainment after a very busy and hard days work.
More money than sense - well that's your opinion, not ours. Your a townie, I pressume?

The variants in the US are so similar that despite the choice of brands it all tastes the same.
So their choice is ? Change the wrapper or switch off? That doesnt seem to be too different to NZ, does it? That in a market big enough to support more than 1 paytv company. Do you think that the recipe that they use might actually work (as seen by 90% of households) or maybe no one is innovative to come up with another prospect.

Now if one of them changed the recipe for the worse I think that households would vote with their wallets.
Just like Cadbury, dont you think?

Agreed, I believe it's not about how much you can afford, or is it really worth the money, everyone has different priorities in life, for some; sky is a priority and will get it's use, others will see it a cost as they are out doing other things.

This will keep going around in circles, everyone has an opinion which is fine.

Personally, I have had Sky since it's inception UHF through to Digital. I have just cancelled it recently but it wasn't on the basis about good or bad value, just don't watch TV as much now and I could rent a number of Blu-ray discs from the local Video Store and watch when I want to for the same money.

Again, comes down to priorities.

I don't have Sky, I have freeview. Am I happy with freeview? No. Why? It doesn't have the content I want.

Am I happy to pay for this content? Absolutely.

What I'm not happy to do is pay for 100 channels I will never watch. The complaint now becomes with Sky and the services they offer. I refuse to believe that I'm a small minority; TV is not my primary form of entertainment and I don't want it to be.

It's great that people like clevedon fit an almost perfect use case for SKY, and with TV the main form of entertainment I can see how Sky's Basic channels make a lot of sense.

However, SKY have a dominant position that affords them content deals other providers just can't secure. The EU, I believe, has laws to ensure competition in positions like this. We don't, so nobody can even attempt to provide me with the content I want.

So what do I do? Well, I either go without and keep my hard-earned, or, well, you all know the other option! Surely SKY would make more money from getting SOME business off me?

I am moving house in July and I see the new one has a Sky dish but I'm going to cancel sky as I don't think it's value for money any longer. If I could pick and choose what I wanted I may stay with it. May look at a Sat STB and see what is out there..

I have Sky for one reason and one reason only. English Premiership football in HD. Arsenal are on every week and I can sit down on a Sunday morning with my boy and watch the game in all its glory.

There are only ever two or three movies a month which interest us and anything else we watch is through FreeviewHD on the HTPC.

If it wasnt for the football we wouldnt bother at all with Sky. The amount of American rubbish just astounds us. You would think we were a part of the USA with the amount of programming there is. Thank god for the internet and Match of the Day, Have I Got News For You, Nevermind the Buzzcocks, Survivors, Waking the Dead and Skins is all I can say :)

Ever stopped to think that lots of people think that soccer is rubbish as well?? Most boring game in the world to watch. He who does the best Hollywood wins the game..
