Krishant007: i just had a question. yes sky wont be showing epl...can they at least show all the FA cup and Carling Cup matches.. at least that would be something if EPL is not being shown.
Benoire:expression: Yes but how many people can realistically stream 8-10mbps?
With the right encoding 3mbps streams can look pretty good, particularly if your watching on a TV.
As for the media centre issue, not enough people have a media centre set up, and I doubt they will ever become popular enough to justify the investment in creating apps etc for them.
DVB-S/S2 can stream upwards of 10mbps. This is the problem in my view... The market is very much setup for STB/TV NOT AppleTV / PC / TV. I would imagine the number of geeks with devices to view this would be high, but the number of overall sports fans low. I know my boss, for example, does not have any devices capable of watching this apart from his PC... and how many people really know how to stream to the TV.

But a lot of the potential audience for the EPL don't want to use online stuff and certainly don't want to use tablets etc.
My father if he wants to watch will have to fork out $150 + broadband connection $30 per month so $510 a year to watch EPL.
Can't see that happening
mattwnz: I think it does show that NZ does need some content regulation, but it is probably very difficult to do with companies operating offshore, and distributing content online. If sky were outbid on the rugby, then I could see bigger problems for sky.

Yes there is but a lot of people only have a small data cap. Having to stream sports will probably put them in the next price point for a lot of internet companies which is around the $20 a month mark.
Also if other family members are using your connection it will affect the quality you get.
Sure you can have a smart TV but you have to have a grunt connection to see in top quality, a lot of people haven't.
Common sense is not as common as you think.

entry level broadband plans are, for most people, $75 for around $30 GB
You can get unlimited data from Slingshot for $90, or unlimited data with unlimited national calling from Orcon for $99
This is not a huge amount extra to fork out, especially compared to the price of Sky basic + Sky sports +MySky + HD ticket which can easily set you back close to $100 per month
Not to mention the other amazing things you can do when you have the internet (like Pron, other media streaming, etc etc)
vexxxboy: you have to remember that the majority of people who watched the EPL , probably recorded it on Mysky to watch at there convenience, are they willing to fork out big money to get up in the early hours to watch it live , i doubt it very much , they will watch it on TVNZ like it used to be many years ago.
