They will be releasing an Android app, so maybe also provide a cheap android on a stick if people want to view it on their TV easily and maybe a telco could provide this as part of a signup.

I don't understand what that means. People with a normal tv won't be able to watch it on that tv, without hooking up some type of box or pc to that tv. Unless they have a smart tv that has an app built in, such as samsung which have tvnz on demand built it. But that depends on the brand of tv.

It means they are looking at developing an app for smart Tvs and Apple TV-esque devices. If the company behind PremierLeaguePass were to develop their own hardware it would just increase costs for the end user and add an extra STB to an already cluttered area of the lounge.

I also think we are at a crossroads here in NZ. In the US its not uncommon to flag TV, and subscribe to internet based content. We see these on Apple TV, WDTV, Roku etc, but the apps don't work here. This new entrant to internet TV is new, and good, but we are not ready for it as what exists we don't use as we cannot in NZ. So, we watch FTA or Pay TV. The general public has no clue about this concept. Someone, maybe this new provider will bridge the gap between normal TV and Internet TV for the masses. Geeks like us won't make this economically viable, the masses will.

(As regards using VPN, masses don't know what that means)

Saying 'If you only get the net to watch the EPL then it is expensive' is the same as saying 'If you get Sky and only only watch the EPL it is expensive'.

It's a bundle. Sky Sport comes with 'other stuff' so does the internet.

The important assumption to make when you compare is: If I only want the EPL then...

The point here is that if the bundle includes broadband internet then there is a whole lot more you can do with it then watch Nat Geo or Discovery, and you can probably do that too if you want.

Sure, whatever service you get there is probably going to be a part of you don't use much.

I would rather have the internet than Sky Basic and I think the future agrees with me.

For example sony tvs have some tv apps like ziln, stuff etc, while others like samsung have tvnz on demand exclusively. I would be more of a fan of this, if brands didn't have exclusive rights.

But many existing TVs aren't smart tv's, so probably the majority of people won't be able to benefit from this. Otherwise you are adding the price of a new smart TV into the cost. And next year another tv brand may gain the exclusive rights to the app.

are the masses ready to learn all about internet TV just for EPL, not sure if they are, many will just shrug there shoulders and watch another sport on Sky

It's not really in a online broadcasters best interests to offer their product exclusively to one brand of TV though because it limits your audience massively. So whilst this is occurring at with TVNZ at the moment, I would expect in the long term you will see apps being offered across a diverse range of TV brands.

And with the lack of smart Tvs in people's homes at the moment, you can buy an Apple TV for ~$160 at the moment, a price comparable to some of Sky's install offerings at times there are no offers available.

If this works good, I can easily see this expanding/being picked up overseas. Maybe even with the Premier league taking it over and operating it like NBA League pass.

I have no doubt the result will be cheaper overall compare to Sky.

For a small minority it may end up being cheaper, in the long run for most people the price will be higher or what you get the opportunity to whatch decreases. Sky + sports for the year is about $984. At $150 dollars for each sport and that price is pretty cheap you don't need to have that many to eat into your savings from not having sky, and that only takes into account of the sports not the other programmes you may watch.

This doesn't really compare to the models overseas. Most of their sports are still viewable on cable or satellite. The services such as MLB.tv are more of an add on. You can still watch plenty baseball without paying. If NZ goes down this model you only have the 1 choice for each sport. Sky has many faults and you can argue about if it is value for money, really comes down to personal choice. The 1 thing you do get is a wide choice and variety that you wouldn't get if you bought each sport individually.

I'm not a fan of internet TV. As far as I can make out, I need to pay $150/year to watch football, I have to pay for more internet data (unless the ISPs will zero rate it), get UFB or something relevant (not sure how people not in the cities will view that). Not even sure I will be able to view the HD content on my large screen TV.

I wonder if sky will get delayed coverage?

how so? $12.50 a month on a normal season pass for all you can watch football and on demand?

its not going to be a issue for me in terms of broadband ufb and have a decent data cap
