I agree. Given that we cannot increase our health system by 50% overnight, what is your solution to save lives in NZ, in this pandemic?

I don't need a plan. We have been following a plan in Aotearoa for 18 months that has saved probably thousands of lives both directly from Covid and other conditions as those folk not being able to get into swamped hospitals. We need to stay on course and ignore the line of CEOs etc talking to the PM and applying pressure to change direction and open up for dollars and cents.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

OK, that's all I asked. Staying in lockdown as and when required till the global pandemic fades out (if it ever does) is an option

Ireland will be a good country to keep an eye on. Nothing about booster shots in the article.

Possibly...

Tthe big wildcard in Ireland must be natural immunity, from the article "There have been more than 370,000 cases"

I am guessing that actual case numbers were higher (asymptomatic etc )  so that's likely over 10% of the pop.. what the overlap between this and those vaccinated is unknown...

The other big unknown is whether having being infected with Classic COVID gives you increased resistance to Delta....

Waikato man charged over fake positive coronavirus test result
https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/health/coronavirus/300414708/covid19-waikato-man-charged-over-fake-positive-coronavirus-test-result

""
claimed the text shut down 15 farms in the Waikato and around 50 companies, working in partnership, were notified of possible community transmission, before it was found the text was fake.
""

The resource taken away from tracing real cases and transmission could have serious consequences.
Every extra day tracing a real contact, more potential transmission of a real case.

While ordering a coffee today (Auckland Level Three so waiting outside)  got caught by an anti-vaxer spouting off all the usual "vaccine kills" type misinformation.

Wonder why they are so obsessive about telling everybody about their views.

I just stated I had been vaccinated, had no bad effects from it and disengaged and left him to harrange others.

How do you folks handle this sort of thing ?

I never speak to anyone who is engaging in anti-social behaviour. At best they will refuse to listen to you, and at worst they will get aggravated and assault you.

If they are obstructing you or behaving in a threatening manner then call the police, otherwise just ignore them.

Nearly 1000 vehicles trying to cross the northern and southern Auckland checkpoints were turned around on the second day at level 3 - an almost 500 per cent increase on day 1

Fivefold increase. Bout time to give up?

Unfortunately staying locked up as fortress New Zealand for as long as it takes isn't an option. If only it was. Everyone needs to earn money to pay their bills/feed themselves. The government needs citizens earning money and paying taxes in order for the government to have money to spend. There is no money tree.

Your comment about "CEOs etc talking to the PM and applying pressure to change direction and open up for dollars and cents" is far too simplistic. When I see people making these comments I think they really don't understand how the world works.

I guess there are a lot of people in New Zealand that get their pay check every week no matter what. Yesterday we were told about a family who couldn't understand what the issue was with the Covid lockdowns. It might be news to them that there are a lot of people who have been significantly impacted from an income point of view.

its a sign that the communication about who can cross the border at 3 has been really rubbish,

Last time house moving was exempt, this time its not.

There is a whole "pick a path" list of who needs a test to cross, who needs a negative test to cross and who can cross without any test

https://covid19.govt.nz/assets/resources/resources/COVID-19-Permitted-personal-travel-over-Alert-Level-boundaries-with-testing-requirements.pdf

Its really not clear.... which is why lots of people tried to cross

Has anyone got ant information on how the new MIQ system is structured? Do you go on a waiting list and move up the list as space becomes available or is it still some random lottery where no one knows if or when they'll get an MIQ spot?

Akin to some senior public servants (and politicians), you've missed (or are deliberately ignoring) Technofreak's point.

Comparing us with Ireland.
Ireland seems to have a healthier population, so we may need to consider.
Obesity rate is 23%, one of the highest in EU, and hopefully international standard so comparable.

30% of Adult Aucklanders Obese.
Auckland childhood obesity is 10% its 22% in South Auckland.
Pacific Peoples obesity is at 72% women, 68.8% men
http://www.healthyaucklandtogether.org.nz/assets/Uploads/Resources/HAT-scorecard-2019.pdf

https://www.health.govt.nz/nz-health-statistics/health-statistics-and-data-sets/obesity-statistics

Apparently we also have high rates of acute rheumatic fever (ARF) and rheumatic heart disease (RHD).
A portion of less serious may go undiagnosed until people are older and get a heart scan.

Obesity is a Co-Morbidity that leads to many others, it loves company.
It seems we are likely to see more serious cases than Ireland.

Auckland with bulk of Co-morbidities is also most vulnerable to border breaches.
Apparently in 1977 we were about 10% obese and looking at photos and memory of the time that seems likely.
