Has anyone got ant information on how the new MIQ system is structured? Do you go on a waiting list and move up the list as space becomes available or is it still some random lottery where no one knows if or when they'll get an MIQ spot?

Its is now a tonally random lottery, you sign up an hour before each release then they spin the Carousel to see who get low numbers and into MIQ....

Comparing us with Ireland.
Ireland seems to have a healthier population, so we may need to consider.
Obesity rate is 23%, one of the highest in EU, and hopefully international standard so comparable.

30% of Adult Aucklanders Obese.
Auckland childhood obesity is 10% its 22% in South Auckland.
Pacific Peoples obesity is at 72% women, 68.8% men

https://www.health.govt.nz/nz-health-statistics/health-statistics-and-data-sets/obesity-statistics

Apparently we also have high rates of acute rheumatic fever (ARF) and rheumatic heart disease (RHD).
A portion of less serious may go undiagnosed until people are older and get a heart scan.

Obesity is a Co-Morbidity that leads to many others, it loves company.
It seems we are likely to see more serious cases than Ireland.

Auckland with bulk of Co-morbidities is also most vulnerable to border breaches.
Apparently in 1977 we were about 10% obese and looking at photos and memory of the time that seems likely.

People who have Lifesytle choices Co-Morbidities. Should we continue to have restrictions becuase of them. Or "let them eat cake".

From that I take it if you miss out by 10 on the first round, you don't automatically start at the top of the list next time around. You could miss out by 1000 or more the second time? In other words you start again from scratch each time they open "lobby".  If that's the case how stupid is that? How does anyone make a plan on ever getting an MIQ spot? Looks like we've replaced one stupid idiotic system to an even more crazy system.

Yip, it all resets and the Hunger games begin afresh with the next release,

If you miss out on securing a room

Each room release will be a new and independent event. At this stage, there will be no prioritisation for people who missed out in the last room release.

That is going to be an interesting discussion. The obesity problem has been a slowly arriving train wreck in this country long before Covid reared it's ugly head. Covid has just moved the end of the track a long way closer to the train.

There hasn't been any concerted effort to address obesity. Don't tell me the lobby to remove sugary foods is any such effort, it's just fiddling around the edges.  Sugary foods have been around for a lot longer than obesity. The obesity problem is more recent and most likely a correlation with the number of KFC, McD's, Burger Kings, Carl J's etc in the community. Obesity is a life style choice. There needs to be a proper food education programme.

The way things were heading before Covid it was pretty well "let them eat cake" as diabetes was (probably already is) going to be a major health issue which our health system is not adequately prepared to deal with. Covid is going to exacerbate that.

I think restrictions will be part of how we live with Covid for a while to protect people with life style co-morbidity including  issues, but I also think at some point the general population will tire of the restrictions and the time will come when there will be no restrictions, other than requirements to be vaccinated in order to be involved in certain activities or employment.

It might be news to them that there are a lot of people who have been significantly impacted from an income point of view.

As much as we would all like to live in Utopia, we don't.

You can't & shouldn't save every sector. Some businesses I think would put their own greed over the good of the wider country. I'm not discounting how tough it would be for some where their entire worth is tied up in a business, but that's a different discussion of how you can support them & protect the whole country at the same time.

It not only just food, it is the number of vehicles, devices , parents being way more protective, advertising, social media etc that has resulted in obesity.

Diabetes if it was by itself wouldn't be as major but it is being coupled with an aging population which needs to flow through the system.

Not very interesting IMO.

Anyway it's not just obese people at increased risk from covid.  People undergoing cancer treatments, treatment for autoimmune diseases, cardiovascular conditions, transplant patients, as well as just the elderly are at elevated risk, deliberately "throwing them to the wolves" merely so that the rest can party would be an unconscionably evil act.

I agree, it's not just obese people at risk. There's a whole range of diseases and afflictions that need to be taken into account and be looked after properly. There was no way I was suggesting these people should not be given the help and protection they need and deserve.

My "It's going to be an interesting discussion" comment was solely around the people that have life style co-morbidities. As time goes on I suspect there will be less and less sympathy for them.

What sector do you work in? I'm not suggesting every sector should be saved BUT we do need a vibrant and diverse economy so that we can have a standard of living we all expect.

I think the problem more so than the proliferation of takeaway outlets is:

A. Humans are getting more and more lazy to the point where many can't even be bothered cooking a meal (hell, look at the rise of uber eats for those too lazy to even drive a car to the fast food outlet)

B. The huge rise in the price of healthy grocery type foods from supermarkets compared to cheap fast food stores.

Suppose that is a conversation for another thread though.

Wonder why they are so obsessive about telling everybody about their views.

They are a cult.

Also you cannot reason with them.

Their premise is they are right and you are wrong. They know all the facts and you believe in lies.

And if you continue to engage them they will win and you will lose. Don't ask me how I know.

Just walk away.

Tell them that the vaccine itself is actually contagious, and just by being close to you they're at risk of catching 5G.

....

How do you folks handle this sort of thing ?

Tell them you had your second shot two weeks ago and are currently at the peak of shedding killer t-cells through every pore in your body... then start to make like you are removing your mask....
