CYaBro:

I just got a bit of a sore arm after the first jab and similar for the 2nd but did get a bit of a headache the day after the 2nd jab.

Now at day three and all that's left is a red patch and itchiness, so a post-bee-sting style histamine reaction.

I think that passes the "does it work?" test.

Other than my arm being slightly sore for a day I didn't have any other reactions/indications for either dose.

Can't imagine what the fuss is about. 😇

For anyone else experiencing this, it's called Covid arm. Quite standard response.

Following on from an offline discussion, has anyone looked at pulse oximeters as a safety check for when people get infected? They're all over Trademe, local stock not need-to-come-from China, and the guideline is to get help when you drop below 90% or so. I was thinking of getting some for at-risk relatives and neighbours but wondering whether any old one is good enough or there's anything special you need to look for?

Not this directly but my previous three Huawei watch models I had here all had SpO2 measurement, as well as one of the Fitbit models and my current Withings ScanWatch. I keep an eye on that as an early indicator in case symptoms aren't visible.

I'm thinking of them not so much as a symptom check but because lots of people are going to get it at some point and it'd be good to have a way of checking whether it's getting serious enough to need medical care. Also buying now while they're readily available will beat the inevitable rush later.

The apartment building construction site that got announced today, yeah, im now a close contact, well sort of.

Guy came to work and was sent home on a Wednsday the 13th morning, got a test and tested positive. MOH in their wisdom have taken two weeks prior of his movements as his potential infectious period, so back to the 29th of Sept, I was on site on the 30th.

I got an email, a call and a text from the building manager and the BC secretary that i was on site doing work for, it was work in the under construction part of the building.

I went through my diary last night and found the day i was on site then checked my covid test results texts as i had gotten two done as contstruction workers were asked to do, i had a test on the 4th Oct and the 13th Oct, both negative.

My covid tracer app has not informed me of anything.

The email from the MOH stated anyone on site was now a close contact and had to isolate for 14 days from the last exposure and get two tests over those 14 days, all good, but im already 17 days from exposure and have had two negative tests, one excellently lucky to have been so close to when i was on site.

I also had a call from the MOH this afternoon, but there seems to be some sort of confusion about my tests not linked to me somehow or something and they were going to call back, no word yet.

Bit of a scare being so close, but i did wear a mask the whole time i was at that site and i am double vaxxed.

I have now changed our covid policy at work so that we get tested every two weeks, week apart for us both so less likely we both have to isolate for a full 14 day period if we get caught up again.

Site has been shut down for a week or two, this will be a massive problem for the coming year i think, sites closed then open then closed and on and on, its going to be very disruptive.

Got my second jab as well yesterday; arm is more sore than it was after my first.

I am also starting to fell "a little under the weather" as the day continues.

Ended up needing several days to recover from generally feeling like crap / from mid Wednesday (20 hours after the jab) to mid Friday.

The main impact for me is surgeries postponed and specialists cancelled and that is before the virus is even close to its full impact.

I was lucky enough to have some cancer removed at Greenlane, was rather shocked at the lack of security and guidance of patients though, almost no different to pre covid.

Not sure when my other surgeries will be deemed important, but also anxious as I need specialist care 3 months ago....

The plus side is my 5 suburb ring, average 91% single dose and 72% double dosed. It really is time for the rest of NZ to help us out, because its coming whether they like it or not, however I think to access desperately needed specialist care wont be until 6 months after we open the borders again, so some time in May. Hopefully by then we have access to a 3rd dose (not to be confused with "booster") so the pfizer full immune efficacy against Delta (vax's were built upon alpha, but its looking like the much higher dose of Moderna is the main cause for difference in Delta full immunity efficacy) raises from the reported 42% to somewhere closer to Moderna's reported 76% (mayo clinic study, still in peer review, has been for ages). Thus increasing antibody levels, however, Denmark has stopped Moderna full males under 30yo due to some cases of myocarditis I believe. Who knows us what us older geeks may get access to by the time general population 3rd dose is rolled out.
Moderna’s Vaccine Creates Twice as Many Antibodies as Pfizer’s Vaccine: Study (webmd.com)

As for Sp02, personally I don't trust my watch or the fitbit I had, I have a high quality oximeter I wear overnight. I have an Omron heart vitrals (battery operation is handy but can be used with wall jack) and a high quality digital thermometer. Due to these I recently diagnosed an infection, what turned out to be a 60x normal CRP (inflammatory essentially) marker, which never got diagnosed due to the covid situation but has since returned to normal auto immune levels. Obvously I had a Covid test done, but this is largely why the actual cause of infection was never diagnosed by Auck diagnostic ward.

This is a strange one, since I got my first jab, one of my AI antibody levels have dropped back to half the upper limit, technically meaning that AI condition is no longer present. It could be circumstantial, we are not sure yet, but very strange all the same :-).

I hope everybody else is keeping safe, wearing a mask in public as it will help lower the viral load to which your vaxx based immunity should have a better time dealing with and or if a break through infection, generally infectious disease severity is linked with viral load. Whilst this is yet to be proven with Covid, I am erring on the side of history and wearing my n95 to both stop others catching if Im asymptomatic and B reducing the potential viral load inhaled. Dr Ghandi is one of my favourite infectious disease scientists/physicians. She is all over youtube if you would like to learn more, but her talk with Zdogg around masks is pertinent.
The 'dose' of coronavirus a person gets may determine how sick they get; masks could help (cnnphilippines.com)

Got a question on behalf of someone at work.

His parents have been in the country for some time, and are due to fly home in a month. They don't have a car and don't speak much English.

The original plan was for him to drive them up to Auckland, act as a translator while they go through checkin etc, then drive back home. But if Auckland's still at level 3 on that date, he's at a bit of a loss as to what to do.

Does anyone know what the process is for this sort of thing?

I have been banned from the main Covid thread and quite rightly so for a dumb Godwin’s related part of my post. I apologise if it caused anyone offence.

However I want to state I am NOT anti-vax. In fact I am pro-vax, I was involved at my workplace with encouraging the uptake of the vaccine and have been fully vaccinated since the end of March. My immediate family fully vaxed since May. I have convinced two members of our extended whanau who were hesitant to get vaccinated and that was achieved prior to 17 Aug.

I have just completed the most stressful week I can remember in a long time and “the Covid” played a major part in making it so. Once I can gather my thoughts a little more I may document it here.

If you put the search term “Auckland border exemption” in Google it will take you to the correct part of the MoH Covid website where it lays out the reasons an exemption can be applied for. From memory the reason you describe is one of the cases allowed, although I was preoccupied with my own reasons to be there. The page has a link labelled “this form” (once again from memory) to actually complete the application.

Adding another 5c to the various conversations here.

double jabbed. First (Friday) got sore shoulder, bit of “brain fog” and a whacking headache (Saturday). Panadol sorted that once I gave in and had some. Sunday was fine. Aside from the headache, I’ve had way worse hangovers. At least when my doctor asks I know what they actually mean by “do you get headaches due to stress/high BP” (no, I don’t, it appears)

second one did nothing. Sore shoulder, but nothing else. Nice. In the words of trademe: a+++ would vax again.

wife had sore shoulder both times. Little lethargic on the second one.

work mates have have everything from “nothing” to “full on cold for 48 hours”. Inconvenience but nothing a day watching Netflix and some Panadol didn’t fix.

for spo2 monitors, in talking to the GPs at work, anything which shines a light THRU you is good. Anything else is useful for educational purposes only. So that’s every watch on the market. If you need to care, get a proper one for $70. I was disappointed as I was hoping to integrate the apple spo2 into the app so we could report it back to the GPs proactively. And it’s cool tech. Oh well

might be ok to see that you were good and now you are less good. But they are looking for data points like “at 90, rest and keep it on all the time. At 85 call 111. At 80 get your affairs in order” (numbers made up but you get the idea, tho they are not far off from memory)

For older travellers that don’t speak the language and get confused it’s best to call the airline and arrange wheelchairs for them so they are escorted from the time they arrive at the airport and through security and on to the right plane. You book this in advance. Maybe he can drive them to the nearest airport border and have an Uber waiting on the other side to take them to the airport.
They shouldn’t get stopped going in, it’s leaving Auckland that’s a problem. They will also have fresh Covid tests to prove they are clean.

Honestly the easiest way will be to fly them to Auckland. this may involve a flight to wellington/chch first but it is by far the most likely way of getting them there.
