Auckland gets to travel https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/covid-19-delta-outbreak-jacinda-ardern-promises-aucklanders-can-travel-at-christmas/SOY6AQE73AXYOKU7WUKD4TG6VM/

So apart from telling us almost nothing new, there was this:

She said Cabinet had not yet made a decision on whether only vaccinated people would be able to cross the boundary, and said the vaccination rates in other regions was a factor in that decision.

The various messages from PM/Deputy PM/Response Minister have suggested:

- Only vaccinated AND tested people would get to leave Auckland.

- You would only have to vaccinated OR tested.

- Now it seems like there's not even that much firmness around the need for a vaccination at all.

- You might need to go at a certain time (Minister), but apparently that's unlikely, (Deputy PM) but today it's now not ruled out (PM).

And people in other parts of the country wonder why we're getting frustrated with the response.

I don't see how people can effectively self isolate if they don't live alone.

Surely you need 2 toilets and/or bathrooms to start with. That would rule out most houses and all apartments.

A very good expert. He's an epidemiologist who has offered brilliant insight and balanced views into the pandemic since the start, and doesn't let political views get in the way like some of the NZ based commentators we keep hearing from.

Like I said, lots of very good experts, including here. Depends who anyone prefers to align with to suit their argument

There does seem to be a cult aspect to the anti-vax movement. I don't understand it at all, but I am in a similar position with a very close friend. He is still the wonderful person he always was in every other respect, and I can have great conversations with him on every other subject, but he absolutely believes the anti-vax propaganda and there seems to be no changing his mind on that. We each know how the other feels and we have agreed to disagree. I am not prepared to give up a very important and valuable friendship over this.

I have a very close friend like that. Git jabbed "for me" (himself) Other than that its anti vac, conspiracy theories, its about the money and so on. But he's like that with other things too, moon landing, 9/11, etc so he is basically anti establishment. But is quite happy to get jabbed for his own benefit, and rely on the establishment for other benefits. I guess its a Kool Aid thing

I think the transmission by contact never really eventuated. If you can stay in a situation where you aren't spreading aerosol that's probably good enough. We have a 5BR house, ensuite and a public bathroom, 3 adults. I could sleep in a spare bedroom, use either bathroom if I was alone, i.e. not passing anyone else to get there. I guess I could potter around outside as long as we left a time barrier between travelling up and downstairs and to external doors? Get room service delivered :-)

I get that, is it better to have an announcement for a fixed date? That way people can plan, shops can plan, and so on?

JPNZ:

I wonder if thats the first covid death for a fully vaccinated person in NZ>?

When you say that it sounds dire. Overseas in highly vaccinated countries, most cases are vaccinated, as vaccinated are MOST of the population

Beware of statistics.

Thanks for the reminder. He lived in Mt Eden which is part of a DHB where 94% of eligible people have received at least one vaccination and 86% have had both.

Next year article says could be 5000 cases a week, and that’s just Northland and Auckland cases. Peak/top still a long way off.

"Health Ministry modeling forecasts more than 5,000 cases per week in the Auckland and Northland regions next year, even assuming 90% of the eligible population is vaccinated, Health Minister Andrew Little said on Thursday. The figure does not include the rest of the country, where modeling is still being conducted."

When we "live with it" You might expect 5 million will eventually get infected? Even though many may not realise, and many will have mild symptoms

5000 cases a week before vaccinations came into play is not the same as 5000 a week when vaccinations have been applied and there is freedom. Freedom Day is also Covid Freedom Day

The 5000 in the park last week can feed numbers for a while let alone rest of congregations.
I've noted a lot of grey hair and pretty average physiques amongst protesters.

It looks like the best vaccination rate we do will result in about.
500,000. eligible unvaccinated.
1 Million unvaccinated.

Growth in Hospitalizations speeding up ?
There are now 73 people in hospital with the coronavirus, including seven in intensive care.
The average age of the people in hospital is 51.

Taiwan is moving to 10 days Hotel isolation and 4 days at home.
Though probably with more invasive oversight to be sure you do stay home, if vaccinated.

I expect our home isolation might be more like the pirate code (guidelines).
However its about the best we can do given infrastructure and available personnel, and privacy limitations.
