GPs are so overworked that anyone walking in asking for a general health check up gets looked at like an alien who just landed.

Agree - our local GP centre is only taking appointments for mid november now! They're underfunded, overworked and leaving/retiring... There is no capacity for new patients within New Lynn, Titirangi, Green bay areas at present which is a concern... but hey I got an extra $40 a fortnight in tax cuts!

I imagine there would be demand for a general health check up service. Even if it were a few hundred dollars I reckon a lot of people would take it up.

In my experience the GPs who work in more affluent areas and who charge more do have more capacity, while those whose patients are of more modest means and who charge less as a result are booked solid for weeks in advance.  I can usually get an appointment next day - but the fees at my GP are about 50% more than I hear others posting.  In tough economic times a lot of people aren't going to try switch to a different GP that might be further away and who charges more just because they have better availability.

There certainly are some who would take up a general check-up service from a stranger, but that function is meant to be part of a GP - they get to know you and their notes record previous discussions that inform lots of background detail for a check-up that would need to be inquired (do you drink/smoke?  Do you have personal or family history of health issues etc).  Rather than proposing we should have doctors specialising in doing general health checks because GPs are too busy (and aren't being funded enough to see more GPs bolster the numbers) I would rather see our health system actually fund the GP properly as they promised before this election rather than the 4% they were actually given.

I thought I saw one recommended recently but cannot seem to find it again.

What is a good N95 etc mask to wear on a plane for flights to and from the US.  We want ones that are comfortable enough to stay on pretty much the entire flight.

Depends on how soon you need them and how much you want to spend, I've found the Breathe99 to be unbeatable, you can wear it more or less indefinitely without too much discomfort.  And since it's a perfect seal around your face and acts as a kind of stillsuit you don't end up dehydrated at the other end.

The 3M Aura N95's can be pretty good for wearing for hours on end. (Depending on your face shape etc)

Where'd you get them from?

I got the first one from the Kickstarter campaign, then another one from the new manufacturer, however I've just checked and it's not clear whether they still ship outside the US, from memory I used MyUS the second time, thus the "how much you want to spend" question, if you fly regularly it's worth it but if it's a one-off it'd be a bit pricey.

Alternatives that others swear by are the Flo and Envo masks which you can get from Amazon, but they're also rather more expensive than the Breathe99 one.  They seem to be preferred among medical staff because it's easier to talk through them, there was a blog article written by a nurse who wore a Envo for a year and the only issue she had was that the gel surround had started to break down a bit (which was expected from a year of nonstop use).

An idiotic nurse in Dunedin gets deregistered for getting her medical information from Dr YouTube 🙄

As well as being a transphobe, she has also been evicted after her previous house was sold in a mortgagee sale:

Way to throw away your nursing career, for...what exactly? 🙄

My health centre doesn't even have a doctor, and they have been trying to get one for several years. The health centre I want to move to because of this won't take on any new patients becuase they also can't get a doctor, so they have a waiting list I have been on for several years. This system is a mess, but the media isn't even reporting on this problem. Health centre and doctors are supposed to be there to take the load off people going to hospital and to the ER. But if people have to waiting many weeks to just get an appointment to see a nurse, it isn't very good. They do however triage nurse appointments at my health centre over the phone based on need, but that could still miss someone with an urgent need.

That's very interesting, do you mind telling us your location? I agree, in some places it's almost impossible to to find a doctor that's taking on new patients!

There was a well-paying position ($400k) plus perks advertised in Tokoroa that was vacant for quite a while, and there don't seem to be any updates since. The remoteness & little if any semblance of nightlife/vibrancy was a likely factor in it being vacant for so long.

"Create a society that values material things above all else. Strip it of industry. Raise taxes for the poor and reduce them for the rich and for corporations. Prop up failed financial institutions with public money. Ask for more tax, while vastly reducing public services. Put adverts everywhere, regardless of people's ability to afford the things they advertise. Allow the cost of food and housing to eclipse people's ability to pay for them. I actually thought our response to the pandemic was pretty good, but I think this bloke thinks otherwise.

I dunno why he bothered talking to Voices for Freedom though - they have no medical expertise whatsoever (outside of "Dr Youtube", lol) but here they were telling people not to get vaccinated because..um...?

That will be the whole reason why he's talking to them, in the same way that if you're making a UFO (technically a UOMEP, Unidentified Optical, Mental, Electronic, or Social Phenomenon) documentary you interview a podiatrist [*] not an aviation engineer.

[*] This bit isn't made up, they interviewed a podiatrist about alien technology.
